The two Frankie Vallis face-off against each other in our latest theatrical battle
The Jersey Boys - UK Tour
In 1950’s New Jersey there were “three ways to get out of the neighbourhood, you join the army, you get mobbed up or you get famous”. For Frankie Vali, Tommy De Vito, Nick Massi, and Bob Gaudio there was only one option.
After over 50 years, millions of record sells, an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a film directed by Clint Eastwood, Frankie Vali and the Four Seasons are also the subject of an globally award winning musical, The Jersey Boys. With productions all across the globe, the story of Franki Vali is hitting the road on a new UK touring production. Set in 1950’s America, Jersey Boys tells the story of a young Frankie Vali as he sets out on his path to becoming a living legend. With narration from all four band members, this production is giving audiences a chance to view the story from all perspectives, allowing for varied outlooks on the iconic band and the even more iconic story.
The setting and costumes in this production work fantastically well to transport audiences back to 1950’s America. The over-head screen is brilliant fun, and is an extremely clever tool for the narration and the effect of the show. When paired with the stairways and balcony, it’s clear that the stage designers use the space across the stage fantastically wells, keeping audiences constantly entertained and engaged. The few gimmicks used within the show illustrates how well all the voices work together within this production, and also works keeps the focus solely on the legendary and much loved music from The Four Seasons.
Franki Vali and the Four Seasons have had a multitude of smash hits and records from the past 50 years which are still loved and enjoyed today. Many of which are featured within the Jersey Boys. The atmosphere within the Bristol Hippodrome was electrified when the familiar and instantly recognisable tunes of Sherry, Big Girl’s Don’t Cry, Walk Like A Man, and Oh What A Night!(December ’63) filled the theatre. Each number was performed with the perfect energy, meaning you could easily believe that it was the first ever performance of these numbers. Can’t Take My Eyes of You invoked a remarkable reaction from audiences who stopped the show with their praise and their applause. I’ve never seen an audience reaction quite as powerful, creating an overwhelming feeling. The finale, Who Loves You, was the perfect end to a remarkable evening with a heartwarming performance from the four stars.
Although the start felt a little hard to get into and follow, this is an wonderful production built on friendship, loyalty and completely lovable songs which are performed brilliantly by Tim Driesen, Lewis Griffiths, Sam Ferriday and Stephen Webb. Four incredible voices, and four incredible actors who create an absolutely fantastic evening that any Four Seasons fan will enjoy. Well done to all cast and company involved in this remarkable production. A real fun evening. The cast and company of the Jersey Boys will be performing at the Bristol Hippodrome until Saturday the 13th of June.
