"Mam and dad always had a mix of soul and experimental music on in our house - so sometimes Stevie or Van Morrison, sometimes Pink Floyd or Genesis. So I guess that blend informs how I write. I'm really excited by people that use their voices in an interesting way. So... I love Maria Wallentin of Wildbirds & Peacedrums, Merill Garbus (Tune Yards), Sia and Camille - whose album 'Music Hole' massively pushes my buttons. Also music from randomness and found sound - John Cage and Michachu. Then also classic Motown - the warmth of those recordings is so appealing - warts and all. Mistakes keep things vital and interesting. Artists that bring the visual and drama to live work really do it for me, too. Bowie, Roisin Murphy, Goldfrapp. St Vincent is doing wonderful things right now - her videos are ace. Blending random sounds, making things unusual enough to appeal to me is kind of where things start when I write - but I always want to end up with a tune that sticks."
