Launch event - 9th November

Join us to celebrate the launch of our new book illustrated by Hackney based artists, published by Burning Eye Books.

One weekend in the middle of October 1974 the French writer Georges Perec set himself a challenge - to describe everything that happened in place Saint-Sulpice, Paris. Not a record of the buildings or history of the square, but a record of 'that which is not noticed, that which has no importance: what happens when nothing happens'.

40 years later we set out to replicate Perec's experiment - with a few important similarities and a few significant changes, most notably relocating to a square in London, a small square in the North East borough of Hackney.

Part documentary, part poetry, part catalogue - An Attempt at Exhausting a Place in London is more than a homage, it is a surprisingly witty, tender exploration of urban life.

To launch the book we're hosting a night at Stage 3 ( 291 Mare Street, Hackney, London, E8 E1J), right on the corner of the square. 

They'll be short readings, music, and of course a chance for you to be among the first to buy the book!

The event starts at 7pm, with performances from 8pm. Featuring support turns from Hackney borough's best poet Tim Wells, and live music from a well known local musician.

Eating Tea With My 'On The Spectrum' Girlfriend

The abundance of sci-fi boxsets could be taken as adventurous, but by the third series of ‘The Next Generation’ I realised that it was more that after an hour all returned to as it should be. It was hard to get past Star Trek without Kirk, but I kept that to myself. My cooking dinner is, at times, boldly going. We both eat one thing at a time, saving the best to last. I wondered what she made of the peas – puzzlingly at once a uniform crew and unruly individuals, the choice to stab with the tines or to scoop with the fork. I worried I was concentrating on the vinegar rather than the chips. There’s a smart, funny, beautiful girl on the sofa, I should just notice the smile the fish fingers are making. TIM WELLS

In a Real Dark Night of the Soul it’s Always 3 a.m.

A blankness stretches out across the length of the night. These words tuck down on the crisp white sheet. No such peace for me, and the words won’t be read till morning, when my girl wakes up, makes tea, wonders how I’ve been. I write when I can’t sleep, she phones when she can’t. It’s just our way of making the drawn-out loneliness of the night a little less so. I envy the slumber of the words between writing and reading. I think of her raising her Keep Calm and Carry On mug to her lips and of the joke where the doctor’s advice to the insomniac is to try to sleep it off. TIM WELLS
