I'll be honest: I was confused at the end. Maybe it was just because I was a bit winded or tired that day, but I only understood half of the plot by the end.

October 23rd, 1997

Y/N was a quiet, timid girl, so it was odd for everyone to see Professor Albus Dumbledore approach her in the library after Charms. The 6th year Gryffindor had her nose in a tattered novel when a sly cough drew her attention away from the book. Looking up, her breathing hitched in her throat as she saw the Headmaster sitting in the chair opposite her. Placing the novel carefully into her book bag, Y/N turned her full attention to the man.

“Good afternoon Professor Dumbledore” She squeaked, toying with her fingers and watching the man twirl the end of his long, grey beard. Albus gave the girl a slight nod and a warm smile, watching how she fidgeted.

“Y/N, I have to speak about something rather important. Would you mind meeting me in my office at half 5?” He murmured while Y/N pondered. After a few moments of silence, the girl nodded, gripping the shoulder strap and standing up in sync with the professor in front of her. Y/N nodded towards him before hurrying out of the library.

5:30pm arrived quicker than Y/N could’ve imagined, heading up the stairs of Dumbledore abode, she rapidly recognised the three teenagers that stood before her. Harry Potter, Ronald Weasley and Hermione Granger. Being in the same year, Y/N had cross paths many times with the three Gryffindors before, she had even considered them her close friends.

A million thoughts ran through her head as she eyed Dumbledore inviting her further into his office. Was she in trouble? Trying to recall every action of hers from the past 24 hours, she came to the conclusion that she was in trouble for the ghastly, unforgivable spell she had performed against a 7th Year Ravenclaw after he had ‘accidentally’ knocked her books from her hands. Her steps became quicker, she thought about how she could save herself from expulsion.

“Professor, I know what I did was grim and unforgivable but the boy had been torm-”, Silencing the girl, Albus began to explain what Y/N would have to do. She had gotten so caught up in her thoughts she had been ignoring what Dumbledore had been saying.

“You will be travelling back in time Y/N” He revealed. Y/N stood frozen. Time travel?

“For what reason, may I ask Professor?” Y/N trembled, voice shaking with every word.

“To change the fate of Harry’s parents, James and Lily Potter”. Time stopped ticking by as her three friends observed her. Y/N contemplated on her decision. Why not Harry himself? Or Hermione? Or Ron? She looked up at the 4 pairs of eyes that were watching her.

“I’ll do it” She hesitantly nodded her head, before Harry ran at her, engulfing her in a hug.

“But Y/N, I must let you know of the plan” He warned, stepping up to his desk, retrieving some sort of necklace.

“This is a time turner, you will use it to go back in time to 1977-”

“But sir, that is four years before the attack in Godric’s Hollow” Hermione fretted, questioning Albus’ plan.

“Yes, Hermione, but in order to ultimately change the fate of the Potters, we must send Y/N back to their 6th year so she can gain their trust and rule out Sirius Black as a suspect for telling You-know-Who where Harry’s parents were hiding” Albus confirmed.

“It makes perfect sense, make Y/N the secret keeper instead of Peter Pettigrew” Ron exclaimed, eyes widening at his sudden realisation of the plan.

“We know that the plan is perfect but has anybody told Y/N the consequences?” Harry stated while Y/N became nervous, a thin layer of sweat on her forehead.

“Y/N you must be aware of the effects of time travelling so far back in the timeline and actually living in the era you are travelling to” Albus started, narrowing his eyed at Ron, who gasped loudly.

“When you arrive back in 1977, you will continue to age from there, which means that by the time you reach here, 1997, if you succeed, you will be the age of 36, not 16” Dumbledore explained. She nodded slightly, Hermione grabbing her hand as she started to shake. Y/N had so many questions, hoping they would be answered as he continued.

“You must keep the time turner hidden at all times, who knows what would happen if anyone in that age got a hold of it” He cautioned, rubbing his face with his free hand. Handing Y/N the necklace, she held it with such grace, such chariness. And while hesitantly slipping it over her head and onto her neck, Y/N felt a great sense of comfort.

“The plan is simple Y/N, you will attempt to become friends with the Marauders, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, James Potter and Remus Lupin,” Harry explained, “And once you have earnt their trust, you will then stick by their sides for the next four years, and once the Wizarding War occurs, you must stay with them, even if something separates you, you need to stay” Dumbledore finished, making sure she understood everything they were saying.

“What if they still choose Peter as their secret keeper?” Y/N fumbled with the hem of her robes.

“Then you force them to trust you instead, tell them everything they need to know if you must, although, you cannot tell them you have time travelled. If you do, you may interfere with the timeline and the events that occur” Y/N nodded, shuddering at the thought of it.

“I’m trusting you Y/N, with everything in me, to protect the Potters, that includes Harry” She breathed heavily, shocked and terrified.

“I promise to keep you and your parents safe, Harry” Y/N smiled, placing her hand in his before Dumbledore called her over to teach her the ways of the turner.

After a briefing of the do’s and don’ts of the time turner, Y/N was finally able to start the mission.

“Y/N, your parents are already aware of this, they said that they feel honoured that I have chosen you to protect the Potters and they wish you all the best” Albus whispered before he had let her go back in time. Y/N smiled widely before bidding goodbye to her friends.

“I can’t thank you enough Y/N, I will always remember you and your courage” Harry uttered, bringing Y/N into a hug for the last time. Hermione cried, locked in the arms of Ron, while Y/N waved, tears streaming down her face before playing with the turner at the end of the necklace.

The world around her disappeared into black ink blots, much like the Pensieve, and her body drifted off the ground. What felt like years, Y/N felt dizzy. She felt her feet hit the grass and looked at her surroundings. Standing next to the goliath Whomping Willow, Y/N’s heart dropped. The moon was almost full and she heard the sound of a piercing howl. Sprinting towards the castle, Y/N felt her feet vanish beneath her. Turning to see who had performed the spell, Y/N took note of his white beard and purple robes.

“You must be our new student, welcome to Hogwarts, October 23rd, 1977”
