TIMELINE OF EVENTS IN KUGISAKI NOBARA'S LIFE:
2002-2017.
• kugisaki nobara is born into the kugisaki clan to kugisaki rina, daughter of locally renowned japanese-ainu sorcerer kugisaki chiyo, and an unknown man on august 7th, 2002 in the mountainous village of tanohata-mura in iwate prefecture, japan. • her childhood is mostly allowed to be some semblance of normal, albeit during storytime, dōwa — children’s tales — are told to her in a ambiguously, digestible manner sprinkled with half-truths of the exorcisms of famed cursed spirits ( think yamabua and kappa ) by past sorcerers in a way to introduce her to rudimentary jujutsu concepts like cursed spirits, sorcerers, and cursed energy. • in the spring of 2008, at age 6, nobara is enrolled into her local elementary school where she attends with her childhood friend, fumi. even at this age, she feels stifled by her village’s customs. during the course of the year, she befriends another older, middle-schooled aged girl who had just moved to tanohata named saori. not even by winter’s full end, driven out by the villagers, saori is gone. • sometime after saori’s departure, in the winter months of early 2009, nobara’s cursed technique, straw doll — engraved since being in her mother’s womb and had been engraving itself onwards — finally manifests. • nobara, later at age 10, is educated on the history of her clan's historical involvement in jujutsu politics, her heian ancestress's role in ryōmen sukuna's election to turning himself into one of many fingered cursed objects, one that itadori yūji would come to swallow nearly two millenia into the modern age, after a lengthy battle with sorcerers of that time. she is trained in the proper utilization of her technique using preserved clan records on its application, hands on training provided by her grandmother by way of field exorcisms of nearby curses, and in later years she finds herself growing a bit distant from fumi due to the nature of her newfound, dangerous work. • still embittered by the treatment of saori years prior, and in general being fed up with the stifling monotony of village life, nobara resolves at age 14 to leave tanohata-mura for tōkyō. she has enough confidence in her skill with jujutsu that she’d be able to make a comfortable living, much to the chargin of her grandmother. • one summer day in 2017: chiyo intercepts a tōkyō jujutsu tech-embossed enrollment letter, sent by current gojō clan head gojō satoru, seeking to recruit nobara as a student. tanohata has no public high school to speak of, so this was perhaps the natural conclusion of all nobara had to learn from her grandmother, that — or it was hilariously convenient for satoru’s capitalization on her recruitment. furious, distrustful of the higher-ups that helm the epicenter of jujutsu society due to their harried history with the kugisaki clan in eras past, and anxious for her granddaughter’s safety, chiyo unsucessfully hides the letter from nobara whose later finding of it results in an argument between them. • in rebellion, nobara takes to dyeing her hair a color deviating from her natural brown, scandalizing even the villagers who praise their close grandmother-granddaughter relationship, and she stops speaking to her grandmother for a while. they have a heartfelt conversation where chiyo lays down her misplaced distrust of nobara’s capability at taking care of herself, she warns nobara that city curses are unlike those in the countryside — unpredictable in nature and boastful of more power — though, she soon comes around to her granddaughter’s self-confidence that reminds her much of her own, bygone youth.
2018.
• during the summer of 2018, nobara leaves tanohata-mura for the city, but not before being escorted to the train station by fumi and parting with a heartfelt goodbye.
