Been to the flea market yesterday for the first time after lockdown, and returned fairly disappointed. I say fairly because, after 2 hour of browsing through overpriced garbage, I dug out this absolute gem. ☺️ It’s a Viennese cookbook for the wealthy. It was written by Louise Geleskowitz, and first published in 1884. (My edition, with its beautiful art nouveau cover, was published in 1908). Despite the absolutely abysmal state of the book itself, the contents are fantastic! It contains every food or drink anyone could ask for, my personal favourites being the section about “Anglo-American cocktails”, the desserts, and the chapter listing every humanly possible way to prepare and garnish eggs (with such great sides/garnishes as Frog cutlett)
The book also features a VERY passive aggressive sounding ad for coffee additive (?) which made me laugh out loud.
