For your recent fic question meme: Love Across the Multiverse (since it's one of my all time favorites...how I have not had it bookmarked before is both mystery and tragedy). 1, 4, 5, or 15.
I'm glad you liked Love Across the Multiverse! I'm really happy with how it turned out, myself.
1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?
So I had the square "aliens made them do it" for my Cap-IM Bingo card and I really wanted to write it because, well, AMTDI. Yay. But I couldn't think of a good plot to hang a story off, because when I think of Marvel aliens, pretty much they just want humans dead and are uninterested in their sex lives. Like, do the Kree or Skrulls or Shi'ar care if you have sex? I think not! Does Thanos or Galactus? REALLY NOT. So basically I could not think of aliens who could make them do it! I was bemoaning this in the #cap-im chat and Memorydragon suggested a Mojoworld story. Because, sure, on Mojoworld they are invested in making people kill each other on television but doesn't that mean they could also be equally invested in making them have sex with each other on television? It sounded great to me.
And you'd think that then I would have been able to write the story, but I... couldn't. Because, see, I was picturing it as a 616 story. And the problem is that in 616, they love each other. There's no tension. If aliens tell 616 Steve and Tony they have to have sex with each other, they will take this as the opportunity to do everything they have always wanted to do with each other, and they will touch each other with reverent, trembling hands (as that one Tumblr post says). Which would also be nice, but it wasn't the story I wanted to write. I wanted a story where they were attracted to each other (so that they would still be up for this) but were really hesitant about this and basically not, you know, massively in love.
And then it occurred to me that I was clearly describing an Ults story, because Ults Steve is repressed as fuck and is not quite sure he wants to admit to liking this guy, and Ults Tony already has a canonical sex tape (that Steve has canonically seen!) and is a fabulous, fabulous human being and has a whole lot of fondness for Steve but is not obviously 100% gone on him in the way 616 Tony "Steve, I look at your handsome face, into your clear azure eyes" Stark is. And then once I figured that out I wrote the whole story in, like, two weeks. But I still thought it would be interesting to play with the idea that I'd wanted it to be 616 by making it so that the people on Mojoworld had also been trying to get 616 and had settled for Ults.
4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?
Tony shrugs. "Craft services. Did they not take you to craft services?" His eyes light up in glee. "Do you not get to go there if you punch someone?"
I think this pretty much sums up the story: bizarre reality TV show! Steve is angry! Tony finds Steve delightful! Even when Steve is grumpy!
5: What part was hardest to write?
Is "all of the sex" a fair answer when the story is, like, 75% sex? For the first half of it I had to remember that Steve actually couldn't see Tony and it is surprisingly difficult to try to write sexy fic when you're like "okay, whoops, I forgot I can't describe how this looks!" And then the rest of it, well, the sex was the primary way characterization was getting expressed, and that is really tricky to pull off and I am jealous of everyone who can consistently write like that, because I sure can't.
15: What did you learn from writing this fic?
Did you know that Mojo is canon in Ults too? Surprise! Human, but canon. I didn't actually read it, but, you know... it's in Ults X-Men somewhere. Also I learned that Wiki has a table of everyone who died in Ultimatum and how they died and it's kind of funny and sad at the same time because OH GOD ULTS. I can't even believe I like Ults, sometimes.
(Anyone got any more questions? Seriously, I'm just sitting here watching EMH; it's not like I'm getting any writing done.)
