The funniest thing about the quasi-polycule Mo/Resa/Staubfinger/Roxane is. Mo/Resa & Staubfinger/Roxane? Obvious, are happily married, have/had multiple children together. Resa/Staubfinger? Lowkey canon as well, certainly have History together and feelings for each other. Mo/Staubfinger? Came back from the dead together, know each other's hearts as well as their own etc. Resa/Roxane? Grew close fast despite everything, extremely shippable. Mo/Roxane? Uh. Well. Sometimes they were in the same place at the same time, I guess???

Okay. So.

I learned from a random tiktok that the Inkheart series by Cornelia Funke will get a fourth book in 2023 (at least in German, idk about other languages). (Which itself is… uhhh,,, idk didn’t have time to think about it).

They also announced that because of the fourth book, the whole series will be re-released with a new cover.

Here is how the current covers are looking:

(Correction: apparently mine are very old and in the current version the first one is red, the second green and the third one I have is the current one. But the differences are minor and I’m too lazy to search them up in the internet)

They are beautiful and classy and carry a very fantasy-esque vibe with them that fits the actual story perfectly.

This… this is a war crime. I should be protected from this under the Geneva convention laws.

I already thought the current American covers are so damn ugly that I would never pick them up unless you put a gun to my head. (Sorry not sorry those are an atrocity.)

BUT THIS. Why are they just random primarily colors? What are the random scribbles? Why those the unicorn have a septum piercing?

I hate it so much I could literally cry. I know you shouldn’t judge a book by it’s cover but I KNOW that I love the books and wouldn’t pick them up in a bookstore. How am I supposed to recommend these books when they look like this?

Even without the frankly ridiculous amount of nostalgia I have for the books and the original covers these are just UGLY.

My mum even suggested I should write a letter to Cornelia Funke and tell her that it’s a bad idea. (Thanks mom, I’m sure that will work…)

26€ for a book no one wanted and it’s the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. An insult to all books I own.

Day 25: Is there a book in your native language you think everyone should read?

Not sure about the “everyone” and the “should” (as in: read whatever you like to read, this might not be for you) but Cornelia Funke’s Tintenwelt is kind of iconic.

Tintenwelt-Trilogie/Inkheart trilogy by Cornelia Funke

Tintenherz/Inkheart (2003), Tintenblut/Inkspell (2005), Tintentod/Inkdeath (2007)

A reread! 14 or 15 years ago I told my family that I had never read a book as exciting as Inkheart (and later the next volumes of the trilogy) before! And all three books were still exciting this time around! Naturally my perspective and my opinions have changed, I payed attention to other aspects rereading this as an adult, and there were elements I disliked now. But when the Eichelhäher/Bluejay storyline finally began I forgot all about it and did not want to stop reading at all anymore.

Fantasy as a genre is not my favourite anymore (and medieval settings are greatly overrated in my opinion), but the effect it had on me growing up is still obvious. Mentioning that I grew up with the characters and coming back to them felt like meeting old friends feels redundant in a way, since this is mentioned in the books too: This is a story about individuals' relations to stories, and the power of narration.

My favourite thing about the trilogy is still Mo's character development, but my favourite thing about the reread was discovering how well Cornelia Funke knows her plants and their ecology. Since the focus of my studies is vegetation science and I also think knowledge of species is highly important, I might have told everybody I met about how happy the large amount of species mentioned made me...

The story is currently being continued in Die Farbe der Rache/The Color of Revenge – I still have not made up my mind about reading it myself. On the one hand, I would love to see more of the characters, but on the other hand, sequels are often not necessary and can get in the way of one's own ideas, especially if they are published this much later.
