A Few Important Medical Tools to Put in Your Family Boat’s Medkit

Fishing is a safe activity you can enjoy with your friends and family. Children are especially fond of the activity as well as it offers them new environments and different new species for their curious selves to enjoy. However, while fishing is one of the safest activities you can do on your family boat, it is still prone to dangers. While you’re in the water with a tiny boat, you’re at the mercy of the waves.

While you can’t control the dangers that Australia’s waters present, you can control the safety of yourself and your passengers. This is where first aid kits come in handy. This small bag of medical items is used to apply treatment to injuries and wounds while you make your way to land.

Your first aid kit should be compact and easy to carry. Make sure that it’s stored in an accessible spot in your tinnie boat, and that it's lightweight enough to easily extract pullout during emergency situations. Putting your medical items in a red waterproof case with a big white cross in the center is a dead giveaway of its purpose – and that’s exactly what you want.

While the usual first aid kits in tinnie boats usually contain bandages, gauzes, alcohol, and a couple of medicines, you can add some important medical tools in there as well. These tools are used together with other medical items to safely and effectively apply first aid.

Paramedic Shears

These are safety scissors that are used to cut bandages, medical plasters, and tourniquets. These scissors will be required when you’re trying to get the right size of bandage for a wound. They can also be used to cut clothes that are hampering the process of applying first aid, or if they’re needed for makeshift tourniquets.

These scissors can cut sharply, making them able to cut through flesh. However, they have a blunt tip to avoid accidentally stabbing and unnecessary damage. 

These scissors must only be used when applying first aid. Do not use them to cut fishing lines or any other equipment in your tiny boat.

 CPR masks

These masks are used when trying to introduce air to another person’s lungs through mouth-to-mouth.

These masks come with air filters that block any pathogen from entering the receiver’s body. 

Medical gloves

Most of the time, when you’re out in the water, using alcohol to disinfect your hands is not enough. Always use surgical gloves when you’re applying first aid on open wounds.

Medical Waste Bag

This is used to store used bandages, tourniquets, and other used medical items.

When you’re out in the water, do not throw your medical wastes overboard. This can damage the environment.

Try to keep a separate back for sharp objects such as fishing hooks, glass shards, and shrapnels.

The contents of your family boat’s first aid kit should contain only the items necessary to treat ailments in case of emergency. We can’t emphasize this enough – do not store any of your fishing materials, accessories, or candies (among other things) inside your first aid kit.
