Bee and PuppyCat character designer Becky Dreistadt is originally from Tennessee and grew up in Williamsburg, Virginia. She has a web comic “Tiny Kitten Teeth” and creates cover art for Boom! Studios comic books. In her interview, Dreistadt talks about her influences, character design on Bee and PuppyCat, and what it’s like to do caricatures at Busch Gardens.
Did you go to art school?
Yes, I went to college at SCAD in Savannah, Georgia. I started making comics full-time after I graduated and moved to New Zealand!
Are you working on anything else besides Bee and PuppyCat right now? If so, what are you working on?
I have my own web comic, but have been horrible at updating it. It’s called Tiny Kitten Teeth. But besides that and PuppyCat I do a lot of cover art for Boom! Studios and back-up stories [for the Bee and PuppyCat comic book]. Lots of cover work for Adventure Time too!
You worked as a caricature artist at Busch Gardens - what do you do when the person you are drawing doesn't give you anything to go on?
One time I was drawing a kid and asked her what she liked to do, which is standard, so if someone likes soccer you draw her playing soccer. And she just said that she liked looking at things. I think I just drew her standing on a hill. It turns out this is also my hobby.
How did you make your way to work on Bee and PuppyCat?
After Natasha did the original short she was looking to change the style a bit, so she brought me on!
When Natasha spoke to you about Bee and PuppyCat - aside from Sailor Moon, did she reference any other series or comics?
She’s talked about a few influences, like Superbook, Ranma ½, and Sailor Moon of course!
What about Sailor Moon do you think Natasha loves so much?
Well, for me it is the pastel colors, cute style and just having an action show that is driven by women! Oh yeah, and talking cats. I think she [Natasha] likes all those things too!
When you’re drawing or designing characters for Bee and PuppyCat what influences your work?
I mostly just try to think of simpler anime from the ’80s/early ’90s. Before everything was really detailed and shiny. A lot of old Toei Animation like Animal Treasure Island and Maple Town. And also things like Panda! Go, Panda!, Sherlock Hound and the original Pokémon designs. Simple and cute.
Did you always want to work in animation?
I knew that I always wanted to draw cartoons and my first introduction to cartooning was animation. I did really want to do animation but later I got really into comics and wanted to do that instead. Now I get to do both!
What was your favorite cartoon/cartoon character as a kid?
I think the first cartoon I got super into was Rocko’s Modern Life.
How did you learn to draw?
I’ve been drawing ever since I can remember. I think I mostly learned from watching cartoons and ripping off the characters.
How long does it take to come up with a concept for a character and to draw?
It depends on how complex the character is and also how finished it is in the storyboard. Sometimes the character is pretty much done on the board and I just clean it up a bit, other times it’s super loose so I have to figure out more how it will look. Usually it will take me a week or two to do designs for a six-minute episode. Then people have to come in and do clean-up and colors after me.
Which character is the most fun for you to draw?
I really like drawing PuppyCat and Sticky (who is a new character). Pretty much any cute animals!
What’s your favorite part about working at Bee and PuppyCat?
I like looking at the storyboards for the first time. I know some spoilers for the show from Frank (writer Frank Gibson), but things always change a lot in the boards and I like being surprised. Plus it’s fun to see a character and be like, “That’s going to be so fun to draw!”
