037. — Do a favor for a friend.
It is not uncommon for Athim to be sent to bed still hungry as a punishment for some infraction, real or imagined - if they cannot break his will, they will instead try to curb him through hunger, perhaps in the hope that his needs will outweigh his substantial wants. It is a fool’s hope, of course: Athim is a creature composed entirely of wants, and the hunger of his soul far outweighs the hunger of his body. If they do not mean to starve him - and they do not; whatever else may be said of her, Mythal will not starve a child to prove a point - they can not hope to tame him.Besides, Renan is small and quiet, and slips easily through the shadows; unwanted gazes slide over him as though he were never there. It is easy, then, to steal food: little enough that it will not be noticed, yet enough to stave off the pain of going to bed without food for four nights in a row - with a fifth soon to follow, so far as Mythal or Elgar’nan may know. They need never know of Renan’s sabotage; let them think their punishment will be effective given ample time.He says nothing as he slips back to Athim’s side, cradling a warm bundle of carefully-chosen foodstuffs; there is no need to announce his presence. Even in the darkness, his brother’s eyes glitter - and his smile, gleaming, is all the thanks Renan could ever ask for.Hurry, he signs, needing no translation: should the theft be discovered - unlikely though that may be - there will be worse punishments in store for both of them, and the best way to ensure no one can prove the crime took place is for Athim to simply devour the evidence. No great hardship, this. Renan ensured he grabbed only his twin’s favorite foods - and had not even taken any sweets for himself, which he counts as both a noble sacrifice and proof that he could not possibly be the thief. And to provide further proof - he has of course been abed this whole time, sound asleep and perfectly incapable of stealing food - he yawns, climbs over his still-eating brother, curls warm and drowsy against Athim’s side where he belongs, always... and falls promptly asleep.
