For anyone who doesn't know, these 2 goobers wnet across china on bikes with no maps and no highways and very (and I mean very) limited mandarin skills, if you have not watched it yet I recommend it a lot, it is a really fun mini series

these two youtubers rode motorcycles across china from guangzhou to erenhot without maps, navigation apps or translation apps and it was a wild ride for various reasons but one of the major obstacles they encountered was trying to ask where to find a hotel, which is pronounced jiu3dian4 (the tones are important) and the locals understandably do NOT understand them at ALL because they pronounce it with improper tones or instead of saying jiu they say zhu, which can change the meaning to anything from 'nine o'clock' to 'pig shop'
anyway after they complete the challenge, they finally are allowed to use a translation app and they try to correctly pronounce hotel. they're losing.
overall a really fun video series, even if you're gonna get immense secondhand embarrassment from watching it LOL
i just got the word for compass on duolingo (yes i’m unfortunately still on it) and i laughed but then remembered how fucked it was for ludwig and michael not knowing what compass was in mandarin.

I that michael calls the two of them “两个白色外国人” (two white colored foreigners) instead of “两个白外国人” (two white foreigners). the translation was throwing me off at first and then I remembered he’s wasian
also naming yourself B汉堡 (p*ssy burger) and introducing yourself to the locals as that has GOT to be a crime
