Typography Tuesday

TIPPLER

Tippler, "Dusk to Dawn in the life of a Man-about-town, as shown by twenty-six different scenes, each decorating a letter of this tippler alphabet," was created by an anonymous designer sometime in the late 1930s or early 1940s. The set is reproduced in ABZ, edited by Julian Rothenstein and Mel Gooding, and published in San Francisco by Chronicle Books in 2003 (an earlier edition was published by Shambhala in 1993 as Alphabets & Other Signs).

Assets: Structural soundness, strong immune system, high intelligence. Bold, generally happy temperament.

Pants was so completely unphased by hurricane Helene and power loss that followed that he kept the rest of my flock perfectly calm with his cheery chill.

He has just come to consider my head a safe place to stand.

Faults: Strange cere growth on the right side of his face. It seems to be cosmetic, but may alter the shape of his sinus cavity. There is a faint click that can only be heard rarely, in a dead silent room. His altered sinus may have something to do with that, but it's unconfirmed.

That generally happy temperament does not extend to interacting with humans. He's extremely shy and flighty, and only just this week realized that it was safe to sit on my head.

He would be happiest in a loft, but could adapt to being a house pet, if paired to a lone hen.

Strict hatch control will be required.

The loft is almost ready for Potch, Roots and Chia! They are going to enjoy the extra space. (:

(Their cage is only suitable for a maximum of two birds, so they are in need of a move to flap their wings)

I decided against working Tipplers into the Assistance Pigeon Project, so I really can't justify making an exception for Pants, and feel it's in his best interest to adopt him out.

Pants would do best in a loft with a flock. There is a possibility that he could adapt to being an in door bird if he had a mate who was comfortable with people. He is flighty and not very human social, but he is very smart. I doubt he will ever be a cuddly bird, but he could potentially form a close bond with someone who has the patience to work with him.

She was obviously lost and very hungry and thirsty. When I tried to lure her in or catch her - she'd flee. Right now she has bad frostbite and missing feathers. She's in no shape to leave and considering she obviously doesn't have a warm place to stay - she's staying for the winter. And then, hopefully, forever.
