Some thoughts from the sections of Les Mis that I've recently re-read (bullet points/questionable grammar because today was a long day of working and I'm tired . . . full-time work then teaching piano in the evening has knocked me out):
- gamin section: I think it's quite lovely that the musical kept the bit about the gamin not having good teeth because of their poor diet - nice nod to the fine details of the Brick ("Tough on the teeth, but what the hell")
- wow I had forgotten just how similar Cosette's and Marius' parental relationships (maybe situations is a better word) were; Colonel Baron Pontmercy practically mirrors Fantine in how he thinks about and writes to Marius, and Gillenormand not showing the letters to Marius echoes the Thénardiers (trans. Donougher 556-57) . . .
- also Marius becoming a "solemn" child (558) parallels the seriousness that Cosette acquires from the Thénardiers' treatment of her . . . I still love and ship Eposette but, okay, fine, Cosette and Marius do complement each other narratologically; their characters are somewhat a study in how does an upbringing away from your parent but with people who are emotionally distant affect your future actions; they are in the narrative sense made for each other
- but, again, I still love the queer ladies
Also, here is a tired Cosette, because I am tired.
