Well, that was embarrassing.

I don't think I like being the obsolete second tank for one-tank fights after all. I'm not entirely sure what I got that player commendation for, either. For refreshing Stoneskin on the MT? lol

So... if an over-a-year-old guide video only used one tank for the encounter, two tanks right now will probably be pointless. Right? Which should mean that as long as the other tank isn't even worse off than I gear- and experience-wise, I should again have sweet fuck-all to do besides not standing in shit and getting killed.

So this happened last night. Was the best worst Titan HM run ever. I had just unlocked 50 WAR. Yes I leveled it on my alt on Balmung as well now. :P Anyway, was doing Relic for it over on Aether Data Center for Balmung server and I queued up for in progress Titan. It was awful and great at the same time. I won't even make excuses for my terrible typing and frankly I don't care. Was having way too much fun. Also dodging mountain buster was the best.

I'm so glad Soupa recorded it and posted it up on the YouTubes. Have it started about when I came in. The whole run was pretty rocky before I joined the fun. . .

There's no reason to pull with provoke (though this isn't your issue with why you're losing hate early) as it only gives you the most hate +1 out of all party members, and since no one else has any hate its not really doing anything. You should start off with fight or flight (assuming you're PLD) shield lob > spirits within > fast blade > circle of scorn > then finish the regular combo. Your attack power determines how much enmity is generated on anything (including flash). Continued in next ask

What I assume was happening was you were losing hate to stupid healers who put up a medica II or something pre fight. That regen affect is a powerful hate magnet when no hate is established already. Or people were going all out before you had a chance to establish any decent enmity. Basically I don't think it was your fault and you were stuck with some ignorant people.

The FoF > SL > SW > FB > CoS > finish combo is new advice to me - I will try that out. That's similar to my soloing starting lineup, though I don't usually include FoF at the beginning, and I do usually include some debuffs from other classes (that I obviously don't have time/flexibility for in a group situation).

I don't know that people were deliberately being ignorant - half the party are skilled friends of mine, but 4 of the 8 of us were new to the fight. As oldfeathers keeps telling me, we're still learning how to do it. It's likely the WHM was precasting Medica II, though I didn't notice specifically. Does a SCH's Adloquium do the same thing? Either way, the WHM was pulling hate, but the SCH wasn't.

Hey I saw your FFXIV titan rant & just wanted to ask ya something. When you said hate was loose who exactly was it pulling hate off you? was it the WHMs or DD ? & how well geared were these people pulling hate off you? Because if your under geared vs the rest of your party or if it was the healers who pulled hate off you... its def not your fault lol. Titan HM is basically 1-2-3, and use CDs on MB, & theres only so much you can do especially if the people in your party are well geared vs you

Hate started loose - as I was running in to Titan, I provoked and before my Shield Lob landed (and way before my 1-2-3 chain, since I wasn’t to Titan yet), a ranged attack hit him. It was all downhill from there. I got hate back, repositioned him, but it was a touchy balance on the hate control after that.

The pick up DDs were definitely better geared than me, and 1 of the 2 healers, but the other 3 were about on par with my ilevel (~67).

It did seem to be the pick up DDs and the WHM who were pulling hate the most, and they’re the ones who were likely to be better tricked out.

I've not been so anxiety-sick in years

It's been at least 7 years since the last time a fight in an MMO has made me so anxious that I felt sick, and then left the computer crying and convinced of my own failtastic suck.

This time it's Titan HM (hard mode) in FFXIV. We failed hard, we failed repeatedly, and I'm again convinced that I am a horrible tank.

I thought I knew the fight, or at least knew what to expect, before we started going in to try it. I was oh so very wrong. I've seen about 6 variations on the 'cheat sheet' chart for this fight like these here, and I've tried to watch a video. I don't tend to follow the videos tutorials all that well, however, which may be contributing to my suck at this fight. At any rate, my "this seems logical enough to follow" feeling disappeared about 25 seconds into the fight the first time. I suddenly realized I had no idea what I was doing, where I needed to go, or how to handle anything in the fight.

I'm a tank - it's my job to hold hate on the mob to keep it off the others. Except, in FFXIV, auto formed groups default to having TWO tanks. I don't know what the fuck to do as an off tank in most situations. If there's adds, I get the adds, no problem. If the main tank is likely to die, I stand ready to grab the mob when the main tank dies. In a fight like this, however, I have no idea what to do as an OT - I am just dragging down the overall damage output of the party, really.

After ~10 fails last night, we gave up and went to bed with the idea that we'd try again today.

I log on, we decide that I'll solo tank this and we'll assemble a group ourselves (rather than let it auto form) so that we can get an extra damage-dealing class. First group is bad - people don't move when they're supposed to, get mad when they die, and drop mid-fight. We reset, get new people, and go in again.

We did better, kind of. Hate was loose, but people weren't dying as much or as early, but we eventually wiped again.

The 3 damage-dealing pick up members offered to switch to tank ._.

Basically, I suck and they would rather our damage be lower by having one of them tank because I can't do my job.

I left the computer to take a few deep breaths and realized that I'd gone into the kitchen and had my head down on the counter, my arms wrapped around my head, while I hyperventilated. I came back to the computer once I thought I was okay, and lasted only as long as seeing another offer to tank the fight before I started crying. I was so anxiety-sick that I could barely talk to Mehuric, let alone anyone else, so I just dropped and left the computer. I knew I was likely pissing people off severely, but I just could not cope.

I spent awhile straightening the house, trying to bring order to my surroundings (and thus myself), but this was punctuated by fits of sobbing where my brain replayed what a horrible tank I am. After the tears stopped and kitties cuddled me for awhile, I was able to sit at the computer without feeling ill. I'm not sure when I'll be able to play FFXIV without cringing, though. I dread the thought of logging on completely right now. Which, considering that this is my primary social interaction with most of my closest friends, kinda sucks.
