A little musing on images in text posts
So, I know that in dashboard view, no matter what size a person makes an image it will be stretched to fit the 540px width. However, when a gif that is created at 540px is used in the text of a post it can lead to some problems if the post is reblogged.
Specifically, the image will overflow the width dimensions (typically 400px or 500px) of the typical tumblr blog template. As a result, the images will display “sticking out” from the normal post. Now, that’s not necessarily a big problem with the “new” way of stacking reblogs that tumblr introduced - because it no longer uses a set of layered <blockquote>s to track within the post. BUT, for posts that are still displaying with the old system, with even 1-2 reblogs the image can be pushed 100 - 200px past the dimension of post displays. This means that the image that is embedded within the text post can overlap things like a blog’s navigation and/or informative elements. Plus it just looks really unprofessional.
I know some people won’t care because they never actually visit their own blog and just hang out in dashboard all the time. But some people do. What it means for me is that I have to go back into posts that are creating this display interference and edit the post HTML. I have to reset the image display width to something that is reasonable - usually under 400px.
I guess what all this means is just that always making big img edits and gifts isn’t always the best idea. And embedding a whole string of gifs in a text post makes it less and less likely that I will reblog it. If I do, it probably means that I go back to the OP if possible to avoid the reblog stacking. It also means I’m more likely to reblog photo posts over text posts if the image content is central to the post meaning. If I create a post where I embed images in the text - like a reaction gif, I will always use a gif that was created at 267px (the new “two across” width) or 177px (the new “three across” width).
So, yeah. I guess I’m not trying to tell anyone how to do anything. Just explaining how I think about the interface with image content.
