DRAW OLIVER BANKS PLEASE-

cannot stop thinking about mag 121 so here’s a very small draft of a fic i’m working on
takes place immediately after mag 121 but before mag 122 — premise is that Jon chooses to die as a human rather than become a full avatar of the Eye
TW: major character death, minor mention of suicide (not discussed in detail)
Jon dies.
It’s a quiet and painless affair, all things considered. If he had been alive to ask, he would’ve said he deserved for it to hurt — for the long, drawn-out thing it was to have been conscious. But now he’s dead, and so he doesn’t know anything anymore.
(The Eye knew he had been afraid to shield Tim with his own body from the explosions in the wax museum, which it had happily gorged itself upon. The Eye did not know that Jon didn’t regret it — wouldn’t know, specifically. The failed Archivist did not live up to the Beholding, could not feed it or dedicate himself to it, and so, he no longer mattered.)
It would’ve sucked no matter what, Georgie decides, but this was an exceptionally shitty result.
There was a tape recorder left behind in his hospital room, one that had been kept running after the visitor looking of death had left. The recorded statement itself was… standard, she guessed, despite not having much of a reference point for these things.
Not quite human enough to die, but still too human to survive.
Make your choice, Jon.
What a load of shit. He might’ve been an idiot in life, but she could see that a lot of the choices he had weren’t much better than what he… chose. God, did this count as suicide?
She filed that thought away for later. For now, Georgie reached out and stroked his hair out of his face for the last time, and then pushed the call bell for a nurse.

im fuxking crying this is the most opaque shit without context this can't mean anything to anyone
Sometimes I relisten to this, one of the funniest interactions in tma just to have a laugh:
Oliver, Antonio my man! You might be canonically handsome af but no one asked you for your name. You sir, are an awkward, awkward avatar of Death.
The thing is, Jon, right now you have a choice. You’ve put it off a long time, but it’s trapping you here. You’re not quite human enough to die, but still too human to survive. You’re balanced on an edge where the End can’t touch you, but you can’t escape him.
There is a scene in the Discworld novel Going Postal where a character is offered a job and if he doesn’t want to take that job, he is free to leave the office he is currently in
Behind that exit door is a bottomless pit- he can take the job or he can die, those are his options
When he protests this, the person offering him the job argues that he has complete freedom of choice, the ‘prospect of freedom’. Oh there is no actual hope of survival if he doesn’t make the choice the other man wants- but he certainly has the option
In Discworld, it’s played off as dark comedy. But here in Jon’s case it is anything but.
A choice between monstrous servitude and death is no choice at all. Oliver knows it, Elias in his little jail cell knows it, Annabelle Cane knows it.
And somewhere, lost in his own mind Jon knows it too.
Much like the other ‘choices’ in his life, he really doesn’t have any option to doesn’t royally screw him over
Even though Oliver is much more benign, I’m reminded of Elias’ speech in 092, that Jon made his ‘choices’ every step of the way even if he wasn’t aware of them
This is another example of Jon being put in an impossible situation and later being judged for the only option he could have possibly taken
Even more horrifying is that there is some awareness in him that making this decision separates him even further from his already tenuous humanity
but what choice does he have?
Elias: My Archivist is broken.
Oliver Banks: Have you tried turning him off and turning him back on again?
