Voltron DR

Samael Crowne, a 23 year old "half-breed" Galran/Altean. I'd changed a bit of the lore for the show so that my mother, the younger sister to King Alfor, was Paladin of the Blue Lion. The lions need 2 pilots to function at "peak" efficiency, so King Alfor & Zarkon were the Paladin (and Knight) of the Black Lion. When Zarkon attacked Altea & the lions were sent away, my mother was sent in stasis in the Blue Lion to protect it wherever it landed - when it landed on Earth she was still asleep for another few centuries until my father - a Blade of Mamora - woke her up after investigating the signal. Since Earth was safe & they had no reason to wake the lion (or more accurately, they had every reason NOT to) they stayed on Earth. They had me and my brother, raising us on stories of Altea & the lions, on the horrors of what the Galran empire has become, and training us to protect the lions until new Paladins/Knights were chosen by them. No scripted S/O, entertained the thought of a polycule of Adam/Shiro/me though, might still script that in

[AIBHNE] 

Oh! You’re still feeding it, then?

[GERTRUDE] 

For now. 

[AIBHNE] 

Just when I think you can’t surprise me, Gertrude, you always do something unpredictable.

[GERTRUDE] 

I don’t very much enjoy being “predictable”.

[AIBHNE]

 Oh, likewise! I think it's awfully boring, you know. After living as long as I have, if you don’t mix things up once in a while, life becomes terribly dull. Or, well, I suppose unlife we could call it.

[GERTRUDE] 

Yes, I suppose we could. Are you ready?

[AIBHNE]

 Well, I suppose so. You have been asking for this for a long time, no reason to make you wait any longer. 

[a ruffling of fabric and the creaking of a metal chair]

Very well then. Statement of [REDACTED], recorded the 28th of October, 1988. Regarding his…death. 

[AIBHNE]

 I don't actually remember much about being alive. I suppose if I did it would make no difference, other than I think it would be quite an unpleasant memory. There's something about being alive that makes you deeply aware of your body, how it moves, how it breathes. If you think about it, you can feel your heartbeat against your ribcage, feel the blood it pumps through your veins in a way that makes them feel far too small of a funnel for that ever-flowing pool of sticky life. 

See, when I say it that way it doesn't sound very pleasant at all, does it?

I was born into a family that valued life. They were believers in a higher power who always was looking out for them. They believed that hope and justice would always prevail because their god said so. They held to this belief even after death upon death of extended family who believed the exact same thing. Their god did not intervene to save their lives, each one was cut short by some tragic force or another.

I attended so many funerals as a child that I grew comfortable in the black mourning dress my mother would hastily dress me in. There were always tears under her dark lace veil, tears in her eyes for family members she’d only spoken about when relevant or spoken to on special occasions. I never did understand her overwhelm of emotions, but I pretended to be affected so I could go to the funerals.

I don't think I’ll ever feel as at peace as the first time I was brought along. I hadn't wanted to leave my room, more engrossed in whatever novel I could steal from my older sister that was far above my reading level. However, my mother wasn't allowing me to stay home. It was my grandmother who had passed. I had known her somewhat well, but I was barely six and had little emotional processing compared to the adults around me. So, while they cried in the pews of the chapel, I felt strangely empty.

Instead of sorrow, what I found sitting on that church pew, was a new found sense of existence. That heavy macabre atmosphere felt like a warm blanket, a comforting tug and my safe anchor. I loved it. Their sorrow was my joy. I had never felt any peace like it before and I had to sit on my hands and cross my legs to stop myself from tapping them in excitement. While the adults talked after the service, I sat by my grandmother, leaned back against that old casket, and in that moment, I felt closer to her than I ever did when she was alive.

Nothing is ever like your first, as they say. But, I still chased that feeling for years afterwards. Nothing quite gave me the same serenity as that first funeral. Still, after that I took to reading in cemeteries and going into every wake I possibly could. I had to start sneaking in after my antics had become well known in my little town and eventually got back to my parents, who were convinced the devil had gotten into me. I suppose their worries were justified, in the end. 

Still, despite the judgement I received for my strange behavior, I couldn’t be dissuaded from it. I hated the other children my age, ones so easily scared by bones and the old cemetery outside the chapel that they could only go into on a dare. The meanest of the children would dare their friends to not only go into the old cemetery, but talk to me, sitting alone while leaning back against my grandmother’s headstone and reading whatever book had caught my eye that day. The poor things were almost always shaking in their boots. I almost felt bad for them, unable to feel the peace the old cemetery gave to me. However, something about their fear made my soul rise. 

It was the first time I’d ever felt such a thing that I once thought was adrenaline but now know it was something much deeper. I still remember the child it had inspired in me through. She was a couple years younger than me at that point and wore her pale hair in long braids that ran down her back. It had been after church and she was still in her Sunday best. The poor girl was almost already swallowing her own heart before she even spoke a single word to me. 

She asked me, “What are you reading?” and my smile widened. She unfortunately didn’t share my glee, as a smile on a face with glazed over eyes almost always looks off putting. Even more so on the little kid dressed in morning clothes sitting against a headstone in the old cemetery. I could almost feel her fear spike, and it rose something more in me. I wanted to terrify her.

It was a new desire for me. I’d never felt anything in the old cemetery other than that melancholy sense of peace. However, her fear was almost tangible to me. And more addictive than any taste of alcohol I’d snuck from my father’s glass. I needed more.

“Grey’s Anatomy,” I told her, showing her the front cover of that dusty medical textbook, “Would you like to see?”

I could tell that, when I held it out to her, it took all of her courage to even raise her hands to pick it up. A courage that was, in the end, pointless. The book slammed around her hand. She pulled and pulled on it, trying to wrench its page jaws off of her wrist. With a swing of her arm towards the dirt, she did finally manage it. However, the book had in fact done something. A shimmering white fragment had replaced soft flesh, the awful life-ness melting away to reveal the beautiful core of pearl underneath. I never did understand why people found skeletons scary, they were our glorious final forms of crystal and decay. 

However, she certainly did. Because she screamed. She screamed and she screamed and stumbled back so quickly she almost toppled over old uncle Henry’s stone marker. She ran so quickly out of the old cemetery, you could have sworn she’d grown hare feet.

And it was glorious. I don’t think I’ve ever felt like that since. I had no idea what was going to happen when I handed her that book, but I somehow knew it would be worth it. And it was. I saw her later on. The skin on her hand refused to grow back. The priests put me into the confessional and told me to admit what I had done, if not to them then to God. I said nothing. I knew I’d stumbled into something far bigger than I had ever realized. What was their God to mine? The one who I knew had brought me the melancholy peace and the rush of causing fright?

When I stepped out of the confessional hours later, I made eye contact with the girl. Her own bulged to the size of saucers. And all I could do in response was smile.

The church never did look at me the same after that. “The kid’s got the devil in ‘em.” they’d say to each other. But I was ecstatic. That was when I started experimenting more. I remember so clearly the day they actually did something. I wanted to try and see what it was like, being one with my friends in the graveyard. What would it be like to lay down in the cool earth like they did? Would it bring the peace about again? I had to know.

I stole a shovel. I don't remember from where I just know it wasn’t mine. I found an unmarked headstone and decided I would occupy the space beside it. And I dug. It was mindless work. But the kind of mindless work that became meditative. The sounds of the spade slicing through the layers of sediment and the dirt once again hitting the ground.

I should have dug the full six feet. However, my fifteen-year-old arms of an academic were hardly equipped for the task. Still, I dug several feet down into the old cemetery. Laying in that hole I’d dug, I did finally reach the peace I’d been missing since it first showed up in my life. I crossed my arms over my chest and just closed my eyes.

But it wasn’t enough for long. I could feel my heart beating. I could feel it pounding in my ears, drowning my carefully created peace.  It was disgusting. I became so aware of my body….living. I didn’t want to live. I wanted the peace. But I couldn’t have it. 

I slammed my hands into the dirt below me and just started screaming. Nothing was enough. There was always just a bit more, just out of reach. I could almost taste it. And yet as I kicked at the sides of the hole I’d dug, trying to get the dirt to fall and cover me whole, it would not come. 

Instead, what came was the priests, drawn into the cemetery by my screaming. It took four of them, I think, to drag me out of my grave. I fought the whole way. They kept me under close watch after that, had me serve in the church in order to “get the devil out of me”.

[GERTRUDE]

 Obviously that did not work.

[AIBHNE chuckles] 

Clearly. However, they did keep me subdued for quite some time.

[GERTRUDE]

 So, how did you die then?

[AIBHNE] 

Ah yes. My apotheosis. The moment that the entity I had come to trust and worship finally reached down and touched me like a renaissance painting. It’s cold touch met my forehead like the Creation of Adam and remade me into its image.

I was in my late-twenties when it happened. I had spent the last decade or so keeping to myself. Working in the church was a respectable job, as well. Not to mention it gave me a sanctuary and plenty of troubled souls to passively feel that good sense of terror. I hadn’t even realized what I was doing at the time. Which, now, of course I do. I can easily see that the Inevitable One had its hand on me even back to that first time I felt the peace. 

When I was about twenty-nine, I made a trip. One of my more extended relatives had passed and my family thought me sound enough now to come along and possibly read a blessing over the deceased. I was ecstatic, however I had to keep my cool head. I hadn’t been to a family funeral since shortly before I dug my own grave. I’d helped in many funerals at the church, obviously, but none of them felt the same as the ones from my family.

So, I made the journey from Lewis down to Inverness. The ferry ride was hardly enjoyable. Being on the open ocean was sickening and I wished I was back inside that chapel, dreadful as it might be. However, I survived. For awhile longer.

The funeral is almost so entirely unworthy of note I’ve almost forgotten it. It did not give me the peace at all. It’s like a drug, in that way. The first few hits leave you feeling so good you chase that feeling again. But, it never gives you it again. Still, you desperately try for something. The attempt is useless.

I was almost falling asleep through it. However, I could hear my extended family members and even my own father murmuring about me. It seemed as though they hadn’t gotten over my childhood terrorizing after all. They hated me and I hated them. They did not deserve this service. They did not deserve the peace in any shape or form.

So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. If this would not give me the peace I sought, I would have to make it myself. I would show them what it meant to be free. It was so easy too. The doors were shut tight, as it was the middle of winter. As were the windows. The Devastating One was likely pleased with my idea, looking back. However, I wasn’t looking to cause pain like one of her followers, I was simply looking for efficiency. All it took was a carefully dropped match and the pews were all turned ablaze. I stumbled away from the burn and towards the door. And, as I slumped back against it, feeling the smoke curl into my lungs and start to choke, I smiled. 

It was them who’d forced me into my role in order to free me from a power that did not wish to harm me. It wanted to set me free. And, I would set them all free as well. The door stayed closed as the fire burned on. No one came to help until later, though I was never sure why. I can only believe that the Inevitable One blessed my sacrifice and allowed me to burn them all for her.

Slipping away was like laying in that grave again, but this time my own beating heart couldn't irritate me. Despite the heat all around me, all I felt was cold. Like washing in a frigid creek and being pulled under. I floated downstream in this current, letting death lead me where it wanted me to go. 

Have you ever thought about what it would feel like to die?

[GERTRUDE]

 I can’t say I have.

[AIBHNE, dejected] 

A shame. I really do recommend it. It's like floating in the middle of the ocean. Weightless, formless, just you and nothingness. If I thought laying in the soil or sitting beside my rotting grandmother was peace, this was pure bliss. I never thought nothingness could be a comfort, but a comfort it was.

[GERTRUDE] 

And then you came back?

[AIBHNE, with a sense of homesickness] 

Yes, I did. I do not know how long I was in that void of nothingness. Perhaps time isn’t relevant here as who could count the seconds in a place like that? Either way, I came back. It wasn’t a gentle rustle, like being carefully awoken from a long nap. No, being pulled out of death is far harsher. It was more like being seized by the ankle and dragged from my quiet resting grounds back into the uncomfortable sensation of having a body.

However, it was different when I woke up. I didn’t feel that disgusting pounding of a heart, nor its effects on the rest of my body. It did not pound in my ears like a drum and deafen me from my sense of peace. No, it was quiet.

And I’d never been happier in my life than I was at that moment. The peace I’d been seeking finally came all at once like a rushing of pure and utter silence. Though, I think I would have liked to stay in that moment of nothingness for a while longer, I knew I had been pulled out for a reason. I had been chosen by something far greater than me, by something that I always knew existed but could never quantify. 

And I was loved by it. 

By the great finality that was death itself. From it, I had been blessed with a righteous mission. I had given my family the peace, despite them not deserving it. Now, it was others’ turns. They needn’t fear me, I only wished to give them a restful sleep, deep under the Earth’s surface. I only wished to give them peace.

[metal chair creaks again]

[GERTRUDE]

So, that’s it then?

[AIBHNE]

[chuckles] Well, there is more to the story. This was nearly eighty years ago now. I’ve lived quite the life since then. However, if I told you all of those stories, we would likely fill up most of your archive. And I don’t think you have time for all of that.

[GERTRUDE] 

No, I suppose not. Not like you do. But, will you do me the favor of answering one more thing?

[AIBHNE]

For you, Gertrude? Of course.

[GERTRUDE]

Are you still dead, then?

[AIBHNE laughs]

What a funny question with a response I’m not sure would satisfy you. The answer is yes and also no. I am not dead in the way I was in the nothingness. But, I am most certainly not alive either. My heart still is rhythmless in my chest and I’ve lost most pigment in my skin from decades of being free from the pooling red of life. If you cut my skin right now, nothing would come out. I do not breathe, I have no reason to. I’ve kept walking and talking by a power that, even after nearly a century of serving it, I still don’t fully understand. 

[GERTRUDE]

A walking corpse, then?

[AIBHNE laughs again]

Yes, I suppose that is an apt description. 

[A LONG BEAT.]

Is that all you need from me?

[GERTRUDE]

Yes, I suppose it is.
