“ohhh when the twelve ep anime has a beach episode, a sick episode, a festival episode and a confession scene” FUCK YOU. when the 200 episode long eldrich horror podcast has a bug sex episode, at least two different cults running in the background, a couple “surprisingly nothing goes wrong” episodes, a confession that is never explicit, fluffy cows and the literal apocalypse in the same episode, and BY GOD does it have a Finale.
On one hand people trying to sort the fears of the magnus archives is funny to me because I think it’s proof that the fears are incomprehensible to human minds so that’s why we try to make sense of them by putting them into groups.
On the other hand it’s really fun to put things into little groups.
I keep thinking about in the 3rd episode of the Magnus Archives the statement giver goes on about watching their neighbor the whole time, and if she gave that statement directly to the Archivist, the shared dream would be just the two of them watching a weirdo eat his notebooks
post that only like 4 people will understand
I’ve never seen it being discussed but mag199 is one of the most important episodes in the show and is crucial for understanding Jon’s character and his choices.
Characters here need to make a choice and everyone gives their take on situation. Except for Jon. The first people to talk are everyone present in the room and Jon is the LAST person who says something here.
And when he says that they actually have more options, his words immediately get dismissed by Melanie and Martin. Through the whole conversation the only words Jon gets to say are some unnecessary corrections and weak protests. But he never gets to say his piece fully.
Again, the person who’s the only one able to change world back, is the last one who gets a word to say.
From Jon’s POV, here he is, again, viewed only as a tool. Here he is, again, not the one to actually decide what to do with the world. He is, again, forced to do something he doesn’t want and his own will does not matter.
And this is crucial for his actions in mag200. He never wanted the option everyone else agreed on, and still he is expected to follow the path that was carved out for him. He never chose to be marked by the Web, he never chose to end the world. And he didn’t want to let the fears free. This choice was made for him.
But still, for the first time HE is the one holding all the cards now and finally, FINALLY be the only one to decide how to play them.
And he does just that.
I’ve got some tma thoughts. I’ve seen some explorations of want vs need when it comes to how Avatars feed. Do they NEED to feed on fear or is it more like an addiction? I think that it’s a bit of both.
For example, in Jon’s case I think he NEEDS statements. They feed him. BUT I don’t think he needs LIVE statements. The paper ones feed him just fine, they just don’t “taste” as good and may not be as filling. But, he would just need more paper statements than he would live.
I think part of why he has more trouble than Daisy with control is 1) he is a fully fledged avatar who died and was reborn and 2) he didn’t have the emotional anchor(s) that she did. Daisy had Basira, who helped keep her human. In season 4, Jon was surrounded by people who didn’t like him. They weren’t friends. They blamed him for their situation. Daisy was eventually a friend to him, but she was also an avatar.
I think that Jon was losing his humanity and slipping into being a traditional avatar in season 4, but didn’t fully slip because of Martin. I think that in order to keep their morals and humanity (even when no longer human), avatars need human anchors to remind them of what they were.
Getting back into the Magnus archives rn and my favorite thing about this silly little horror podcast?
I’m a big horror junkie so now any horror movie or show that I consume can be categorized into one of the fears 😈
I also really like talking to myself in the shower like Jon gives his statements…
