Another I’m In The Wrong AU snippet where I tread the waters of writing guiding adult & sad/confused kid relationships

F!Rise Leo aka Lee & ‘12 Leo aka Leo :D

Word Count: 750+

Leo’s hesitant, clear from how he twiddles his thumbs and keeps his gaze on the ground.

Lee raises a brow and leans back, propping his hand behind him on the dojo mat. He raises a brow at the nervous teen and says softly, “It’s okay. Whatever you have to say. Or ask.”

Leo nods silently. “I know…”

Lee nods in turn, silently tapping his fingers on the mat. He doesn’t want to rush the teen, but he’s also not exactly sure what to talk about. He’s not sure where to go or how to reassure the teen into talking. And the silence is really starting to get to him.

But the teen, he seems to be in some sort of internal dilemma. He looks to be wondering or questioning himself on whether to say something or not. He’s incredibly nervous despite Lee’s assurance, twiddling his thumbs even faster.

But suddenly, he wipes his face of a nonexistent tear. The effort produces an actual tear to fall, a singular tear that slips from his eyelid and down his cheek.

“Sorry,” the teen whispers out quickly as he wipes the tear away.

Lee shakes his head, “Nothing to be sorry for. It’s okay.”

“Right, I…,” Leo stops himself short before another apology. He shakes his head and massages his hands to stop their fidgeting. But his hands don’t stop as he continues to massage and massage and massage his hands until Lee moves.

Lee sits up and suddenly massages his shoulder. “Are you okay?”

Leo nods. He nods too many times before it suddenly warps into shakes in disagreement. He wipes eyes again, prompting more tears rather than getting rid of them.

But Leo finally clears his throat, and asks in the smallest voice Lee didn’t think was possible for the teen.

“What do you do… when you miss your dad?”

Lee watches as Leo nearly shuts down, avoiding eye contact altogether. The teen closes his eyes, as if to hide from the possible answer Lee has for him. The tears that once began to form have stopped completely, finally halted by the teen taking a deep breath.

This time, when Leo looks at Lee, he looks prepared for an answer. As if he’s ready for a solution to a problem that can be solved. Almost determined to overcome this obstacle.

And Lee realizes the teen doesn’t seem to know how to cope properly.

Maybe he shouldn’t deny the possibility that this teen is his counterpart. It’s now very clear that they’re different versions of each other.

So, like a proper adult, Lee slaps his hands on his knees and grunts when he forces himself to get off the ground. He crosses the steps to the teen and sits down next to him, grunting as he does for maximum ‘conversing with an adult’ experience.

Then he leans back on his propped prosthetic with a hefty exhale.

“Well,” Lee begins, “I cry.” He leans to the side to nudge Leo’s shoulder and adds, “You were just about there, so might want to get on that.”

Leo rolls his eyes but it’s undeniable that he fought back the smallest quirk of a smile.

Lee shakes his head and gives Leo a soft pat on the carapace before continuing, “And after that, I went to my brothers. I’d cry with them, and talk to them about anything. And if I didn’t feel like talking, I’d just be around them. Hugged them and I’d never let go until I felt better.”

“But…,” Leo begins before stopping himself immediately. It’d be rude to ask. It’s not fair to ask Lee when his brothers are gone.

“Now, I just…,” Lee’s voice trailed off, but his expression doesn’t change. It doesn’t falter or grow upset like his voice might suggest. He just stares ahead, blankly or not Leo can’t tell.

“Now I just kind of… take time to myself. Think a lot. Take a breath. Cry a little because no amount of crying is ever going to really take the pain away. But crying all the time won’t get me anywhere.”

Leo nods as he absorbs what Lee is saying.

“But you,” Lee catches Leo’s attention and points at the dojo’s exit. “You’ve got your brothers. And they lost their dad too. So I’ve got a good feeling they gotta be feeling what you’re feeling too.”

“So…,” Lee hums softly and nudges Leo’s shoulder again with his own. “I think you should go bring this up with them instead of me.”

there's been a rise in appreciating '12 feral leo and i just want to say, you all have to get into idw right fucking now. the 2012 series was HUGELY inspired by early idw issues, taking many MANY elements from it. (like a lot. enough for '12 to be considered a kind of lowkey inconsistent idw adaptation) and i am telling you, as a certified hamato leonardo expert that his characterization in idw is just. INSANE. this is getting way longer than originally intended when i just wanted to show just how unhinged he is.

( just a few selected moments for a little taste i don't want to spoil anything for ppl who plan to read idw)

this. this one is just UP there in my "top leo moments across the tmntverse" like the entire thing. the build up to this moment in the entire chapter really helps with it, but like just these two single frames. how other than his lil bro everybody is losing their shit. the qoute??? talk about fucking RAW. like just look at this.

this one is another favorite that unfortunately needs prior knowledge to make it really stick but just enjoy the absolute batshit, feral behavior of leonardo brutally making the bird mutant essentially flightless.

there are plenty more moments of hinged leo behavior in idw but just overall. he's sooo good in idw okay he's a great brother and really amps up the parent behavior and i may have talked about only him, but idw has great angst for donnie raph and mikey too (like. GREAT) flawless raph and mikey character building, a fresh reincarnation plot, MOM TANG SHEN, lowkey bad parent splinter, jenny and the foot leo plot everyone alr knows, interesting mutant characters, saki has a sexy kitsune wife, gods exists and idk man it's just an amazing tmnt run go read it. (and then come talk shit about the +100 chapters with me bc they mostly suck </3)
