The Darkest Plight

I find myself thinking about the moment Mikey and Donnie find Splinter in s4ep21 a lot. Splinter's whole situation that episode is mildly distrubing which I think is why that moment impacted me so much. Splinter plummeted to the depths of the sewers, hit his head multiple times on the way down, and ended up with what looks like a broken or sprained ankle. And while he is down there he encountered the Rat King who tries to convince Splinter to join him again, and when he continued to refuse turns into a giant monster rat to consume him. That...is terrifying from any perspective. Only for Splinter to find out that the Rat King is well and truly gone when he sees his bones. He is stuck in the dark, in pain, hallucinating or haunted by the spirit of his old foe, and then this beautiful moment happens.

The voice acting here is incredible and is part of what struck me so much about this moment. Splinter sounds so relieved to hear the voices of his sons, and he has so much emotion in his voice when he says "I have never been happier to see such smiling faces." The way he said it makes it seem like in those awful minutes or hours he was down there, he thought that maybe he would never see his family again, that he would be stuck with a literal skeleton of his past and the memory of the Rat King haunting him.

But then his sons are there to save him and their joyful smiles at finding him give Splinter hope again, and he is just so happy to see his loved ones again. So much so that he full on snuggles into his sons, his ears get droppy as he the fear and tension leaves him and he finally can relax, and he has one of the widest smiles I've seen him have in the show. He feels so much relief and love in that hug and needs to feel that they are real, that they are there, and that everything is going to be okay. This feels like one of the most tender moments Splinter has with the turtles, especially Donnie and Mikey and I will cherish it forever. :) 🐢

The main difference between 2012 Splinter and rise Splinter is that if 2012 Splinter some how got ahold of TikTok or YouTube, he would watch videos of little kids being cute, and if rise Splinter some how got ahold of TikTok or YouTube, he would watch videos of little kids falling on their faces.
