talk about her relationship with esme :D
( META PROMPTS / ALWAYS ACCEPTING TBH )
MOTHER – when had she last muttered the word? when had the very image of her own mother (ebony beauty crowned in tight springing ringlets) perished to time? she couldn’t forget the sweetness of Hattie Grace Hale, of the way her lips would curve to a smile as daughter’s name slips from her lips – couldn’t forget the warmth of her breast upon her cheek – the soothing touch of her battered hand (roughed through the little years spent in servitude) caressing the soft of her cheek – like hands of unpolished glass grazing upon skin, textured through her years of work and ABUSE. slavery had changed many a gentle heart – and yet her mother remained the same. ever loving as she was smiling. even now, rosalie remembered every detail of hattie’s smile – the dimple engraved in her left cheek, the slight gap between stained ivory… how had she managed to preserve her nature? rosalie often wondered. how could a woman so KIND, so trusting refuse to lose her innocence to the cruelty of a malicious reality? why couldn’t she be the same?
decades rose had wondered if the shattered pieces of her mother somehow live on through her veins – but rosalie was far from trusting, far from FORGIVING, far from the angel she had envisioned her mother to be – lifting the world to the GOOD it could be. she tears and rips at the threads of her being, unraveling herself for the TRUTH of her nature. who’s seed was planted within her? who’s FRUIT did she bear? if not her mother’s, then surely… no. rose refused to be linked to him in more than a name. but if her mother’s dimple did not survive through rose, then where was her MEMORY?
she remembers the very moment she had first met esme in this NEW world, dressed in lace and lilac, lips colored in a soft petite smile. it wasn’t there – the tender divot upon her cheek – at least to the naked eye; but it was ever present in her smile. that ungapped, dimpleless smile held the very nature her mother wore. there was COMFORT here, kindness, and purity – someone to call HOME. in this stranger she had found her mother’s likeliness – the very seed of GRACE she had searched so desperately within her own self. finally, she had found her – and within the bones of eternity.
esme, as time goes by, proves more and more very same of hattie-grace – and rosalie finds herself effortlessly taken by her demeanor. the very touch of her hand held the same warmth her mother had soothed upon her cheeks – and her laugh, just as musical. more and more esme is trusted with hattie-grace’s crown, promised on the very same day rosalie had called her MOTHER.
and like hattie-grace, esme became her REFUGE when the world fell in, the very comfort she needed as heart ached to heal. she became the first to slip through a broken heart’s barricade, the first to witness a smile -- a laugh. it was because of esme’s loving touch that rosalie had taken her first step towards ACCEPTANCE, to finding her place in this new world she had been awakened to. esme was the very home she could her head upon, the very calm to wash away a STORM... her mother. her life’s companion, entrusted with all her darkest of secrets and fears, called upon when heart began to ache. and what was a mother if not her confidant and best friend?
despite it all, the rage that remained within her, the hurt -- the ache, esme was always a reminder of the GOOD in this world, just like hattie-grace. and although rose would always wish that she could learn to have but a piece of that unrelenting tenderness, some PEACE had settled upon a troubled heart, knowing now that hattie-grace lived on in her mother’s laugh...
