a/n: thank you @sugary-bowl for handing me this fic idea on a silver platter, i knew i keep you around for something.
there are men bustling in and out of the corridor. well, not quite men. witchers. geralt comes to a halt at your door. “y/n, stay in your room.”
“what’s going on?” you ask frantically, but geralt’s shutting the door before you get the whole question out. there’s a monster about, this much is clear, and you have no doubt the witchers will have it taken care of in no time. which is why you slip out of your room once you’ve deemed the halls quiet enough.
“where are you off to, girl?” a gruff voice echoes from the end of the corridor, and you don’t need to turn to know it’s lambert.
“just wanted to see what all the commotion’s about.” you explain, turning as you speak. “it’s not fun being kept in the dark all the time.”
you can barely see lambert, not with the way he’s standing so far away, tucked in the shadows.
“hm, sometimes the dark is the safest place to be.” he sighs. “so, you just get back in your room, yeah? it’ll all be handled by morning.”
“why are you so far away?” you ask, ignoring his gentle command. “i can barely see you.”
“yeah, well, doesn’t matter. i’ve got monsters to kill, you’ll see me soon enough.” he says, making to turn, but you’re quicker this time.
you close the space between you, gripping his arm and bringing him into the moonlight with you. that’s when you see it. his eyes are pitch black, his face pale beyond belief. you’re not sure why he seems so ashamed about it, though. it’s not like this is the first time you’ve seen a witcher.
“goddamn it, y/n!” he curses under his breath, looking everywhere and anywhere but at you.
“why are you hiding, lambert?” you ask sternly. you aren’t joking around.
“gods, why do you think, woman?” he scoffs, looking straight at you now. “because i’m fucking ugly! i-i didn’t want you to see me like this.”
“like what?”
he shrugs. “i don’t know, like some sort of monster.”
your entire expression softens, though he can’t see it, too busy looking down at the stone floors of kaer morhen. “lambert.” your hands reach up to cup his face. “look at me.”
he does as you ask, the way he always does.
“i think you look lovely.” you smile. “it’s pretty cool, if i’m honest.”
you watch lambert’s lips curl into an incredulous smile to match your own. “you really think so?”
you push back a few ginger locks away from those black eyes of his. “yes, you silly oaf.” you press a tender kiss to his cheek before pulling away. “now if you go get that job done before sunup there’ll be more where that came from.”
