Note to self: you want to start a list of traditional clothing practices that signal romantic unavailability
I'm not so much interested in the distinction between married and unmarried, but specifically signalling open to romantic overtures (meaning unmarried and adult doesn't necessarily mean ready to mingle)
What i have so far, citations to be hunted far again:
Nederlandse klederdracht:
Zuid-Bevenlandse Protestantse vrouwendracht (oorijzers voor vrouwen):
Koning Lodewijk van Holland decreed in 6 juni 1809 (Kon. Courant nr. 138)that:
'In te gaan met den eersten van hooimaand, zal het geen vrouw van het platteland van de dorpen in het departement Zeeland vrijstaan meer dan een oorijzer tot tooisel onder hare muis te dragen, de vrouwen kunnen er een ter linker zijde en de ongehuwde meisjes een ter rechter zijde dragen, edoch alleenlijk de vrouwen, die zelve hare kinderen zogen, zal het vrij staan er twee te dragen.
(The King did hand out two golden "ear irons" in a festivity for the women who qualified afterwards."
, van Museum de Kantfabriek ook iets te herinneren van verschil van kant in de muts, sjaalknopen voor mannen (ten minste in Urk)
EDIT: looking at my photos of the folkwear market/eiberdjes dag Nunspeet, it's more likely I'm remembering the men in Staphorst having a handkerchief code, I think it was the group with the many buttons
(I wonder how the gay handkerchief code corresponds to traditional Dutch fisherman knotting their handkerchief to communicate bacherlordom)
African Surinam koto: yaki, the short coat, how you tie the ribbons on the back signal married, single, or looking for someone
Bavarian Tracht: how you tie the apron over your dirndl
EDIT: apparently something someone invented in the 80's that permeated social consciousness enough that modern Tracht wearers do part attention to the way they tie their apron (see reblog)

For fun, include that one American 1950s magazine article with how girls wear their bows
Sámi square buttons (see reblog) + other arctic cultures (see following reblog)
Look into hawaiian flower behind the ear
Do i just want the ability to make clothes say Single and Don't Even Try It? Maybe..
