Chapter 15: Talking to The Doctor
To their surprise, when Enno woke up, Warrior was still in the bed. His tail was still curled around them even as his arms supported their head and his from under the pillow.
Enno smiled and cuddled in further, enjoying that they could finally get some morning cuddles in before the day starts.
Warrior's eyes open momentarily before he spots them.
He also cuddles closer to them and falls asleep once more. It's not everyday when he gets to sleep in.
Enno started purring when he cuddled closer and nearly drifted off to sleep once more.
Wind suddenly jumps and lands on both of them. "GOOD MORNING!"
Warrior grunts and groans. "Good morning, Wind."
Enno grabbed Wind and brought him down in the middle of the pile, hugging him. "Good morning Sweetheart!" They were laughing. "Are you all ready?"
"YUP!" Wind grins. "Already to go! Just waiting for the shift or the portal. Whichever comes first."
"Yay." Warrior deadpan, flopping back onto the bed. "Back to bed then."
"Nope! Time to get up dad!"
"Nnnoooo...."
Enno hummed then remembered the meeting they had scheduled with the doctors later that day and groaned as well. "Actually, we should get ready... The doctor wanted to see me." They sighed, pulling away and giving Warrior some head pets as they shifted back.
"You, let your father rest for now. I'll get ready." They said, getting out of bed and gathering their stuff.
Wind giggled and eagerly took their spot. Warrior doesn't hesitate to envelope him as well, knowing that he's gone too far to go back to sleep.
He might as well get comfy and wait for Enno to get out so that he can shower too.
Enno put their change of clothing on the counter. They didn't want to waste time since no one knew how long they had until they were leaving through the next portal. They sighed again, knowing that this meeting would be the worst of it. Also, they realized they needed to find more bottles to carry magic potions. They should have asked how long the procedure lasted and if they could have just done it then and there. Enno went under the water to sulk. There was also Cia, who could be still awake and fighting the doctors still. Too much to worry about.
Warrior watched as Wind slowly got more comfortable against him, purring contently. Warrior purred back quietly and waited for Wind to be fully asleep once more.
With that done, he slowly disengages from the boy and goes to get his clothes for the day.
He heard the water running and smiled. A hand comes up to brush over the mark they gave him and he felt little butterflies flutter about. It's a giddy feeling.
He likes it.
Ironically, when Enno looked at their hand where the scar was, they were also smiling. They washed their hair and body with the soap and got out, doing the rest of their morning routine while they had the chance. Drying quickly and getting dressed, they got out with their hair in a towel. They saw Warrior and went over giving him a kiss. "Morning, Honey."
"Good morning, Sweetheart. Did you sleep well?" Warrior says softly. He jets his head toward the bed and grins. "He fell asleep again. Poor kid. Woke up too early. His excitement probably kept him up too."
"Mhm, what are we going to do with our son?" They gave him a hug. "We have a long day today so let's do our best." They let him go so he can get ready, going to their stuff because they needed to leave some things here. Enno had some shells from Outset that they thought were cool, small objects that they won in Four's era, and a small loftwing feather. They do tend to keep a lot of their history books and journals with them while they travel. Enno put their things in the ottoman in a corner for safe keeping. The idea that they finally had a horde made them really happy for some dumb reason.
Warrior watched them for a moment before he gathered his clothes. "I have to take a shower too but then we can go, alright? Hopefully we won't run into any problems while we're there."
He pauses by the door and looks at the two of them with a small smile. "Let him sleep a bit more, yeah? We'll have to wake him before we leave anyway."
Enno flinched and nodded. "Of course."
They smiled up at him and went back to what they were doing. They wanted to bring this stuff back home but didn’t think they were able to. They put some of the broches they collected in the Ottoman. Their journals too. The one’s they knew they could part with since they already have spark notes in them.
Warrior finishes his shower within ten minutes. He comes out shirtless and drying his hair again, watching Enno put things away and figuring out what to take. A lightbulb goes off in his head and he turns around. "I forgot to give you the things I bought! I think you'll find them quite enlightening."
“Wait seriously? I told you not to.” Enno sat back properly, looking at Warrior, confused but not knowing why. They had a few more small objects that they’ve collected. It all looks like small meaningless things but they knew where they got each one. Enno put their keepsakes in the ottoman and stood up. “What did you buy?”
"And I told you I would." Warrior smirks. He pulls out a bag that has a strap to go around their shoulder, intent on showing each item one by one. "I got Lana to enchant this."
He gives the black leather bag to them, unbuckling the latch. "It's to hold your things. Magic inventory. Pretty cool, right?"
He smiles back at them, looking too proud of himself. He goes back and pulls out four more things. One is a jeweled necklace. The other is a polished wooden box.
Another is wrapped in fabric. And the final object is a book of sorts.
“Warrior- this is too much.” They look at the bag and the other objects. They pick up the thing wrapped in fabric, then the box and lastly the book, not really knowing what they were. “Should I open them now? Also I’m putting this necklace in the horde. First piece of jewelry you’ve given me. It’s important now.” It’s flashy but it now holds meaning.
They pick up the thing wrapped in fabric.
The thing in fabric is weighted more than they assumed. Warrior sat in front of them and waited for them to unravel it. He was very excited.
When they finally do, they come across another leather object inside. There's a seam and an opening. Enno went to pull on it and was suddenly met with a blade.
The handle is beautifully crafted and molded to fit the grip of their hand.
Warrior gulps a bit. "For self defense. I was thinking maybe a bow would be preferable. But if push comes to shove, you can still attack with wild abandon and get a hit in. A bow would take some time to learn how to use properly."
Enno nodded and put it back into the bag. “Then the box and book? Did you give me a new journal? I’m sure I have more pages. Unless…” Despite talking about the book, they were more or less looking at the box. “You really didn’t need to do all of this.”
"Of course I did." Warrior smiles, pulling a leg up. "Nothing wrong with getting new stuff anyway. But yes the journal is new, all blank pages and some have pockets on the pages as well. I can't think of a use for them but I thought you'd probably be able to think of something while you use it."
Enno picked up the book and looked at it one handed. “I can put the key to translate everyone’s language with mine.” They closed it again, putting it in their new bag.
“So then what's this?” They asked, looking at the box.
Warrior grins. "Open it and find out."
So they do.
Inside, Enno could see a line of pencils and charcoal. There's a sharpener at the bottom with a neat row of erasers on the side. On the other side there's a long blue feather with a metal tip. A quill and three small bottles of ink at the bottom of it. One red, one black and one green.
Warrior flushes a bit. "For your journal."
“I- This is so much.” Enno closed the box and bag before giving him a hug. “Thank you.” Pulling back to give him a kiss, they switched over their stuff into the new bag, still finding small things to put away.
“All my stuff looks weird with the gold and jewels.” Enno laughed but didn’t care.
"Who cares?" Warrior snorts. "It's ours and ours alone."
He kissed their cheek and stood, reaching for his clothes. "Do you have any idea when the doctor would be in or...? Do you want to have breakfast first?"
“She was there really early yesterday so we can get it over with before breakfast. Buuuut, I rather you not miss eating again.” Enno watched him for a second before turning back to continue putting things away. “More so now than before, since we are going on the road.”
The only things that aren’t packed are empty bottles Enno found since they liked to keep health potions just in case.
Warrior pulls his shirt over his head and eyes the bottled. "Do you want to fill those up with the magic potion now? Breakfast isn't served for another thirty minutes. We have some time."
He moves toward them again now that he’s been clothed. "I'd rather you have too many than too little."
It was only three bottles.
“Then let's see if she is there, if not we can go get breakfast. Or something.” Enno picked them up and went to the pots to refill them. “It would honestly make me feel easy since Doctors appointments normally take a lot of time.”
"Alright." Warrior ruffled his hair and moved to wake Wind. "Come on Buddy. Time to get up."
Wind hums and looks up. Warrior smiled softly at the exhausted boy."You have to go eat breakfast, kiddo."
"But I want to stay here with you." Wind rubbed at his eyes.
"We're going to go check in with the doctor first." Warrior smiled and helped him out of the bed. "Then we'll meet up later."
Enno grabbed their new bag and put their old one in a corner just because they were sentimental but didn’t really want to get rid of it yet. They helped Wind up and out of bed.
“Come on, Sweetheart.” They took his hand. They were already all ready to leave, once everything was finished.
Warrior looks over the room and nods to himself.
They leave as a unit and Warrior locks his door.
"Did you have a nice nap?" Warrior tries to fix Wind’s hair.
Wind nods and yawns.
"Good." Warrior reaches around and wraps his arm around Enno’s shoulders. "I hope today is a good day. Too much has been happening lately."
"Oh yeah! Mask is back." Wind blurts.
Warrior nearly trips on his feet. "What?"
Enno blinked at him. “Yeah? I told you we are getting a new party member. Good to know that my suspicions were right. It was him or Hero of Spirits.” They shrugged. “At least it's a nice surprise, I guess. Wind and Four have another kid to play with.” They teased the sailor, ruffling his hair.
"We... trashed that room." Wind laughs. He then looks up and dusks down from Warrior’s glare. "Wild made us clean up, we weren't that bad."
Warrior sighs. "Later."
Wind pouts.
Warrior’s hand rubbed Enno’s shoulder for a moment before they reached a fork in the road. "We'll be back, Link. Go eat."
Wind smiled softly and nodded. "Go hear some good news."
Warrior salutes the young boy and leads them both back down the opposite hallway. "Well, I'm hoping for good news too."
Enno waved Wind goodbye and followed Warriors, “I mean we already know it's pretty bad. It’s just how bad it is.” They sighed, leaning their head on his shoulder. “I hope the schedule will be easy, I really want that surgery but that's going to have to wait until we settle down.”
Warrior nods along. "We're going to have to make due until then."
He sighs as the medial wing comes into view. He opens the door for them, letting Enno go in first.
"Ah! Your lordship!" The receptionist gasps. "Right this way please. The doctor will be right with you."
Warrior thanks them and takes their hand. "I recommend trying to think of some questions to ask the doctor when she's done with her explanation."
Enno blushed at the title. “Link, I am bad at these things. I don’t know what to ask other than probably something dumb followed by rambles.” They whispered, holding his hand a bit tighter as they followed the nurse. They get to the room quick enough.
Warrior smiles a bit and leans into them. "I'm just letting you know to keep something in mind. Like a script."
He sits them down on the bed while he takes the chair. "At least that way to already know what to say if you don't get the answer to your problems right away."
“I’m happy you can be here right now. Just in case I didn’t get everything right.” Enno said, leaning on the bed frame. “I’m just worried it's a lot worse than we thought. If it is, I’m personally going to fight Cia.” They sighed, remembering something. “Oh, I told the doctor how it happened, because I didn’t know how to explain it otherwise.”
Warrior opens his mouth and then closes it like a gaping fish. He looks confused. "I mean.... ok....Whatever you deem to be the best, Dear."
The doctor comes in with her clipboard and freezes. "Captain Link!"
Warrior waves. "Good morning, doctor."
Despite being visibly flustered, the doctor goes on. "Well, yes. I'm sure you're here to discuss the results of the tests we've conducted. I'm glad you brought someone with you."
Enno smiled. “I want to make sure I don’t get things confused.” It instantly got a little awkward. “I, uh, hope it's nothing too bad.” Not knowing what else to say.
The doctor shakes her head. "You're fortunate. The results show that you're type D which stands for depletionist."
The doctor sat down next to Enno on the bed as Warrior took their hand.
"Now there are typically two types. A and D. Addictive and Depletionist. Addictive is the more dangerous and volatile of the two types. Very aggressive. The gland in this case tends to consume the magical ions of the being until reserves are empty and can also build tolerance to them, consuming more in the process. Depletionist is simply a faulty system. The gland has trouble retaining the magical ions and they disintegrate back into your system before they can be absorbed and stocked in full. With time, reserves will be deleted. While you're case isn't the most mild I've seen, it also isn't the worst case scenario."
She flips a page on her clipboard and looks back at them. "Seeing as this may be, surgery is still a viable option. Now for dragons it is a more complicated circumstance given the gland’s additional roles to maintain homeostasis but it's easy to circumvent these roles to other parts of the body. Any questions so far?"
Enno nodded. “Seems exactly what we talked about yesterday. So no questions about that from me.” It’s all very familiar in different ways, but it seems to be not that much more than what they had talked about in the morning yesterday. Enno was embarrassed that they didn’t know what that gland does and it's been three days. They haven’t actually learned anything about their new body.
"What if surgery isn't an option?" Warrior asks as he crosses his legs. "Hypothetically."
"Well..." The doctor tilts her head. "Then supplements would have to be taken regularly in order for the reserve to stay above a certain threshold. There aren't many options around this circumstance to begin with, unfortunately."
Warrior nods and holds Enno‘s hand tighter. "We're leaving soon, so surgery can't be the first pick at the moment."
"Ah." The doctor says clearly. "That makes more sense. Well, given the reaction to magical stimuli and the form of magic you have-" She turned to Enno. "-It would be best if you take the supplements once a day with a meal or at least before you go to sleep."
She writes on her clipboard and rips off a piece of the paper. She hands it to them. "I'll go get the prescription ready. It should be ready within the hour. Do you have any more questions?"
Taking the paper and reading it slowly so they can translate it, Enno nodded. “Just- a kind stupid one… what else does this gland do? I figure it is affected by when I use magic. But is there anything else? I want to avoid making things worse. Other than that, I don’t have any other questions.”
Warrior also leans in to look at the paper, reading and understanding it quicker before they could get past the first paragraph.
The doctor pauses, marginally confused (because why wouldn’t a dragon know that) before she shrugs. "The glad is used in terms of balance and muscle coordination for a dragon's wings. It helps synchronize movement and make use of stabilizing the dragon's ability to fly."
Warrior winces. "So... if it's removed-?"
"Oh, plenty of dragons have learned to fly without it! It's not necessarily needed, just helpful. Flight would just have to be coordinated more manually afterwards."
"Thank you doctor." Warrior nods.
"Come back soon. The prescription will be ready shortly. But I won't keep you in this stuffy room." The doctor smiles. "Lobby is to the right, if you're interested in waiting."
Then she leaves.
Warrior sighs and bonks his head against Enno’s shoulder. "Well that's not so bad. Do you want to wait or go eat breakfast?"
They sighed. "No offense but the fact that your Hylian is a mix of three different writings is killing me." They gave him the paper. "Breakfast please."
Getting up to take his hand and leading him out, Enno continued talking. "Also don't worry about flying too much. I don't intend to do so anytime soon. I’m afraid of heights."
Warrior smirks a bit, his arm wrapping around their waist. "If you don't do it, you'll still be afraid."
He turns and kisses the side of their head as they walk down the hallway once more. "I'll be with you though. We can start small. Like just flapping your wings. No need to be in the air yet."
He would also rather them get the hang of it while they still have the gland. If it would help make things easier for them in the beginning, maybe afterwards, learning to fly wouldn't be so bad.
Enno cuddled closer to him as they walked. "I still think I want to wait for a bit. Maybe when we settle down. We need to also tell the others that this is a thing I’m dealing with." They groaned at the thought. They would probably have to break that ice delicately. "I promised to tell Wind about it at least."
Warrior hums. "They're going to find out one way or another. You can almost smell it. Your lack of magic, I mean. It's only normal for long before it starts depleting."
He rubs their side. "We'll eat, go pick up the supplements like she prescribed and then we'll meet up with all the others while we wait to switch. Sounds good to you?"
"So everyone can sense it, not just you," They said, loving the small attention as they came close to the dinning hall. They were hoping they wouldn’t have any interruptions. "But yeah, that sounds good. I just hope we aren't thrown into a fight. I’d rather not deal with that."
"I'd rather not either." Warrior opens the door to the dining hall. He looks inside, scanning the area before he lets them in as well. "I haven't heard any new news about Cia but I think we should be in the clear today. If I jinxed us, you reserve the right to hit me."
Slow day in the dining hall it seems. No one else was there. "I won't hit you. Like I said, there have been things that bothered me about her behavior that's been hard to describe. If anything, I'll bonk her with a stick." Enno refrained from saying they’d be putting her in horny jail, but the idea is now stuck there. They pulled out a chair for him and themselves. "Either way, I think it will end up fine."
Warrior snorts and takes a seat. "I'll trust your judgment then. Besides, we're leaving soon enough. Think you can outrun any danger if it pops up?"
“I always try to. Haven’t gotten hurt yet.” Enno shot back, their hand subconsciously rubbing the mark. “Still can’t believe that this is official.”
Warrior grins like the cat that caught the canary. "I want to do so many things... but they will have to wait. At least until, like you said, we settle down."
“I mean we can still do those things. It just depends on what you have in mind. The way you're talking makes it sound very domestic sounding.” Enno started eating when the food came, trying to think about what he was talking about. “If it’s date ideas, we can still think of something while traveling.”
"Very domestic things." Warrior winked at them. "We should try and do something while we're out though. I don't know if you've noticed but I... while we're here, I don't think I'd have enough time to treat you to all the things you deserve. I tend to be swamped with work."
"Oh I figure that was going to be the case as soon as we got here." Enno smiled, relieved to finally have coffee. "Don't worry about it too much. I'm not surprised by this outcome, if anything I was expecting you to be busier than this."
