Magnificent Bastard Proposal: Sasha Waybright
Amphibia is a Disney XD series following the human girl Anne Boonchuy who stole a "music box" from a thrift store at the behest of her friends Sasha Waybright and Marcy Wu on her thirteenth birthday. When she opens it, the music box (revealed as an interdimensional device known as the Calamity Box) whisks her and her two friends into the world of Amphibia, an island populated with anthropomorphic frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, etc. Anne finds herself living in Wartwood with the Plantar family comprising of Hop Pop; Sprig; and Polly the Polywad.
The rest of the series is Anne's journey of trying to find her friends and return home.
Sasha Waybright was one of Anne's childhood best friends who was first introduced trying to "protect" a young Anne and Marcy from some older girls...albeit she fails at it. While not much is known about her life, aside from her parents seemingly going their separate ways which would explain her controlling nature.
On Anne's birthday, Sasha and Marcy convince Anne to swipe the Calamity Box (albeit Sasha is unaware of the true power the music box held). From there, all three girls are transported to Amphibia being gone considerably for a few months (though no one seemed concerned that Sasha and Marcy were missing aside from Anne).
Having been captured by Captain Grime and his army, Sasha works her magic on Grime's forces convincing them to quit their jobs much to his chagrin. Noticing that Grime was having trouble with his men, Sasha recommends being nicer to them so they could be more easily organized. Grime takes her up on that, and it works. When herons attack Toad Tower, Sasha assists in battling the giant birds. Impressed with Sasha taking part in the fight, Grime offers her a wager: become his second-in-command, or leave which is a bad idea since everything tries to kill you in Amphibia.
She takes him up on the former option hoping that doing so would help her reunite with her friends.
After word gets out that Hopediah "Hop Pop" Plantar had gone up against a toad in an election for mayor of Wartwood, Grime marks him as a rebel who had to be swiftly executed. Sasha is well-aware of the plan but cares less about it. In "Anne of the Year," Sasha and the Toad Army arrive to Wartwood to "invite" the frogs to a banquet.
Anne tries to escape with the frogs after Sasha discloses the true intention of the occasion, but Sasha, being ever the manipulator, tries to talk her out of her rebellion and it nearly works...if not for Sprig slinging mud at her.
Sasha angrily tries to kill Sprig, but this breaks Anne out of her funk and she engages in a swordfight with her leading to different stunts like Sasha throwing her cape over Anne to disarm her. As Toad Tower is falling, Anne tries to save Sasha, but Sasha tells her that she probably didn't need her anymore. Sasha lets go and falls, but is caught by Grime in the nick of time.
In season 2, Grime has something of an existential crisis since Toad Tower was destroyed and he decides to watch Suspicious Island and eat junk food all day, getting out of shape. In "Toadcatcher," the best character General Yunan arrives trying to capture Captain Grime. Sasha and Grime take her on, and, noticing a waterfall, Sasha takes advantage of Yunan's habit of telling her full title. With her distracted, Grime pushes her off the cliff. The two then decide that they would take over Newtopia.
After convincing the other toads to assist in overthrowing King Andrias by acquiring the legendary Warhammer belonging to Barrel, Sasha and Grime set their plans into motion. Sasha reunites with Anne and Marcy at the Third Temple learning that they needed to recharge the Calamity Box. She convinces them that she had turned over a new leaf in order to earn their trust so she and Grime could breach the city. However, even then, Sasha's true feelings subtly leak out.
Come "True Colors" and Sasha and Grime's invasion starts off strong with Grime threatening to flatten Andrias's head with the Warhammer. Enraged, Anne calls Sasha out for her betrayal yet again declaring that she was no longer friends with her. Sasha, in turn, tries to send Anne back to the Earth out of spite but the Calamity Box was not working.
Anne's words pierce Sasha, but she agrees to assist Grime in remodeling the palace leading to them realizing that Andrias was not as good as he presented himself. Naturally, Sasha tries to warn the others, but she had burned her bridges with Anne already. This leads to another epic swordfight and her defeat. You know the rest: Andrias reveals his true colors and battles the heroes. Sasha and Grime try to hold Andrias off long enough so Anne could escape to the Earth, but it goes as well as one would expect.
In season 3, Sasha goes through significant character development. She and Grime retreat to Wartwood where they claim to the frogs that Anne left them to ensure that they "protected" the town. Having read a message that Anne left behind praising her, Sasha cries finally realizing how much of a bad friend she was behaving. After Andrias's robot invades Wartwood, Sasha and Grime battle it, and to their surprise, the frogs of Wartwood also take part. Sasha would become the leader of the rebellion until Anne returned to Amphibia.
Is she charismatic? Thinks on her feet?
Oh, yes. She is dangerously skilled at manipulation and charisma when it comes to getting what she wants. Just look at the way she had Grime's army playing to her fiddle. She recommends to Grime to treat his minions nicely to get them in line, which works. Sasha constantly plays events to her advantage such as by taking advantage of Yunan's tendency to go on tangents regarding her titles.
Well, for seasons 1 and 2. Sasha assists Grime in his plan to execute Hop Pop and later tries to murder Sprig for something as trivial as mud to her face. She gets Barrel's Warhammer but that came at the cost of her two friends leaving after she put them in harm's way. She then tries to help Grime take over Newtopia once more backstabbing Anne. For the most part in season 3, she is no longer villainous due to turning over a new leaf (for real this time).
So, this is the iffier part. In "Sasha's Angels," when she learns that some of the Wartwood rebel fighters have been captured by Barry and his crew, she doesn't rush to save them reasoning that it would compromise their mission, and they would also get out themselves. That does happen, but still. She was willing to leave them as hostages.
Absolutely, to avoid gushing Sasha is both genuinely cunning and manipulative and surprisingly a skilled warrior as well. Even whilst Grimes prisoner she was able to charm the guards and got them to quit his army as a way of toying with him, and after joining him she helps him become a much more competent threat, teaching him to utilize a more pragmatic approach to things. She pulls off successful schemes and has several small moments of trickery like her taking advantage of Yuuna's need to say her full title to distract her, and getting the Toad legions on her and Grimes side by getting the warhammer, whilst riding the giant fish guarding it. She is still great even after her Heel–Face Turn, skillfully dance fighting with Anne and defeating the core.
Is She Too Much of a Bitch?
Sasha is a bad, toxic person. She and Grime were basically the main villains of season 1 and continue to plot things through season 2. She manipulates and controls her friends aplenty, was willing to kill Pop Pop with Grimes. Then manipulates her friends in a plan to take over Amphibia itself, tricking everyone into thinking she changed to accomplish it, her selfishness also makes 2 members of Grime's group finally leave after they nearly died from her disregard.
She had loads of redeeming qualities even as a villain, she still genuinely cared for her friends and wanted to bring them home, even attempting to sacrifice herself when she figured Anne may be better off without her. She became legit friends with Grime and tries helping him back on his feet. And she is nowhere near the Monster Andrias or the Core are, and is genuinely horrified when she learns there real plan. She also has a genuine redemption when she realizes she is a horrible person, and has a full arc of growing better.
Definitely bad enough, but with enough admirable qualities to balance it out, including a full redemption arc.
So, with all that being said, what say you?
