. . W is for Wales🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 (well, at least it should be. It’s the only one and I did live there for two years.) But instead, in these troubled times, I’m choosing Weymouth Bay. . . . I’ve had some good times in Weymouth despite the state of the seafront B&B’s I’ve stayed in. In the years building up to 2012, I was regularly there shooting our hopeful Olympic sailors honing their skills at the annual Sail For Gold regattas and finally the London Olympics for real. What a fabulous couple of weeks it was that summer; sun and wind almost uninterrupted for the full fortnight. During covid though, it’s become home to much larger vessels that also share a rather large place in my heart, furloughed cruise ships. Last week, as lockdown restrictions were eased a little, I drove down to witness history (and test my eye-sight, ha ha). The weather forecast was for sun and very little wind so I went for it. I arrived before sunrise and left after sunset in the hope of getting the best light at either end of the day. It’s a rather dramatic sight seeing these giant, ocean dwellers, sitting serenely at anchor in the bay. They made me conjure up images in my mind of whales penned inside a sea-life aquarium. Rather more optimistically though, these creatures will go back to the seas and hopefully soon. I wonder what changes will take place on board them before that can happen? Cruising gets a bad wrap, unfairly I feel, when it comes to hygiene.
