He tends to lose track of the numbers. That's what happens when fucking monsters erupt from the Earth and try to kill you. Tony spends the fights holding his breath and the hours and days and weeks after trying to fix what the kaiju have done to the machines.
So he sees it once every couple of weeks, mostly when he's rubbing the sleep from his eyes or falling into bed.
The last thing he expects is to see the numbers counting down to zero when he clasps hands with the monolith of a man who was running the Shatterdome over here.
Tony stutters for a moment, moves to tug his sleeve down. He's positive that the Marshall already knows. Tony only wishes he could read the man's placid expression. That way he could know if he even had a chance.
Men like them, men that had worked up to their elbows in the slick and dangerous, men poisoned from the inside out, they didn't get happy endings.
But a part of Tony couldn't help but hope that he might get some relief, some kindness in the middle of the tug of war between sickness and the kaiju, to see which one finally took his life.

Send me a ♥ to find out how my muse feels towards yours.
"Marshal--"
Feet click together, hands clasp behind back, shoulders squared. Chin up-- not in defiance: in reverence.
"One of the greatest men to ever step into a Jaeger. And not someone I would want to cross-- even if I've toed that line before. I might raise unholy hell and I might not show a lot of respect-- but if there's one person who's earned it?
It's Stacker Pentecost."
"I'll wait here for you."
"Fifteen minutes, tops. If you hear gunshots, come running."

[Stacker is a monolith of a man. Something cut from living stone and placed upon the Earth. Tony can't help but watch him, voraciously eating up every second and hoping for some kind of crack. Some break. Not to see the man fall, but to feel that he was human.
He's drawn to him, to his strength and his flaws. Stacker Pentecost need not have any one thing to draw Tony's eye, because his presence alone is enough to make the room feel empty.]
