Or – Tarou and Jirou are not brothers. But does that really matter?

Happy Valentine’s Day, dear tynxcann!! I tried to do my best with this prompt since I like Tarou’s and Jirou’s almost brotherly relationship very much… I really hope you will enjoy the short story I prepared for you!

Just a small explanation – I know that Jirou is technically older (by 50 or so years) but it would be confusing to call him like that, so please just forget about this small detail. Think of Tarou as the older one. Yes. Thank you.

“Aniue?”

“No.”

“Anija?”

“No.”

“Then how about aniki?”

Silence falls between them; Jiroutachi stares at the other male expectantly, this… stupid, hopeful smile plastered on his face, while Taroutachi simply closes his eyes and prays to gods.

“…How many times do I have to repeat it so that you can finally understand,” he answers slowly, in a very calm, very impersonal tone. Even Jirou, as much as he is an idiot, should already know that he’s pushing the older male to his limits. “We are not related. Consequently, you are not my brother, Chiyodzuru Kuniyasu.”

Silence.

Jirou stands up, a mixture of anger and hurt clearly written all over his face. “Family is not only about blood ties.” For a moment, he looks like he wants to add something more, but in the end he only shakes his head and leaves, the sound of his footsteps fading in the distance.

Tarou doesn’t see him for the next few days.

As much as he’d like to be happy about it – about the lack of whining and stench of sake, and the other’s overwhelming, annoying presence – he can’t. It’s like something is missing from his usual routine and it’s making him go crazy.

…He’s not going to apologize, though. It’s not like he was wrong in the first place.

Instead of that, he observes and wonders.

Sayo and Ookurikara appear in the garden just in time when he’s sitting in engawa with a cup of tea cradled in his hands. The two swords don’t pay him much attention, though – it seems that they’ve just finished their work at the stable, if the hay sticking from the tantou’s hair is anything to go by.

“Tarou-san.” A voice from behind greets him; Shokudaikiri closes the fusuma behind him and steps closer to the oodachi. “Mind if I join you?”

He nods slowly, meeting the Date sword’s eye. “I wasn’t prepared for a company, there’s not enough tea—if you give me a moment I can prepare more.”

“There’s no need, really,” Mitsutada replies with a smile as he sits down next to him. “Don’t bother yourself, Tarou-san. I’ll have to leave for the battle soon either way.”

The bigger sword fishes out the strands of hay from Sayo’s ponytail. The Samonji sword blinks, then says something quietly, quiet enough that the pair sitting in the engawa can’t catch his words.

Ookurikara smiles.

“They are… a peculiar couple”, Tarou muses. “There’s nothing that could connect them; no common smith or master, exactly no family ties. And yet…” For some reason, they have built this relationship, made it work.

“There are things more important than who your smith was or what school you belong to.” Shokudaikiri smiles and the oodachi is not sure whether it’s directed at him or at Ookurikara, who is currently giving Sayo a piggyback ride like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Even Tarou can’t help but look pleased at the sight.

He shifts a bit, remembering the anger on Jirou’s face. “But that doesn’t make you a family.”

“Why not?” Mitsutada answers without hesitation. “We’re swords, Tarou-san. Humans, at the very least, are connected by the same blood, same flesh. And we? We’re things made of steel, just shaped by different hands. Besides,” he points to Sayo, clinging to Ookurikara’s neck. “Do you think they care?”

If their expressions, if Souza’s gentle touch on the Date sword’s shoulder as he guides him and Sayo to the room shared by Samonji brothers are anything to go by – they don’t.

No one does.

Taroutachi closes his eyes.

…Jirou.

“To be honest, Tarou-san, I thought that you, out of all people, should know that best.”

When he opens his eyes, Shokudaikiri is already gone.

Before he has a chance to properly think about the implications of Mitsutada’s words, the saniwa announces the team for the upcoming battle. Atsukashiyama, a place they’ve been to many times before – but recently, there have been countless reports about Kebiishi appearing nearby. Keeping that in mind, their master doesn’t let their guard down and chooses only the finest, strongest swords, capable of winning even against the wrath of the cursed troops.

Hotarumaru. Souza Samonji. Shokudaikiri Mitsutada. Ookurikara.

Taroutachi.

Jiroutachi.

“…Come back soon,” Sayo says quietly just before they leave, as he offers two omamori, one for Souza and one for Ookurikara.

Tarou glances at Jirou, his throat clenching painfully. As expected, the other is ignoring him, his eyes focused on the gate leading to their destination.

He swallows his pride and steps closer to the younger male, the omamori in his hand feeling heavier than ever.

 “When we come back,” he whispers; Jirou’s whole body tenses visibly, but he doesn’t move away. “Let’s talk. Please.”

The smaller oodachi simply nods his head. His hands are shaking slightly as he replies: “…If you wish so.”

Tarou lets out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding, and slips the omamori into the other’s hand.

“I do.”

It’s been a second, a short moment of carelessness; it’s not the first time he’s been fighting against Kebiishi, but be it the tiredness from the previous battles or lack of concentration… Before he even knows what’s happening, a corrupted tachi is behind his back, and Tarou knows – he’s too slow, too—

Clang of metal hitting against metal. Scream. Splash of red.

Jirou is there in front of him, receiving the slash that was aimed at him, protecting him with his own body.

With a pained grunt, using the last ounces of energy he can muster, Jirou moves again and cuts down the enemy.

Crimson red flowers blossom on the colorful kimono while he breathes heavily, eyes unfocused, his sword slipping out of the numb fingers.

“JIROU!“

Taroutachi is blind to anything else than the figure of his brother withering in pain as he falls on his knees. Kebiishii or not, he doesn’t care – even as a sword offered to gods, with less battle experience than some of them, years of training and practice pay off and his body moves on its own, repeating the moves he’s learned, killing the enemies that dared to touch someone close to him. All the while he doesn’t move away from the fallen sword, shielding him with his own body until the last of the enemy swords is dead, lying lifelessly at his feet.

The rest of the team doesn’t move, not sure whether to expect the worst; they silently watch Tarou drop to his knees and hold the wounded sword.

“Jirou…”

The other laughs weakly, staring at Tarou through half-lidded eyes. He opens his palm, showing him the pieces of a torn omamori.

“I—I got it all dirty,” he whispers and closes his eyes, slowly losing consciousness. “I’m sorry… T—Taroutachi.”

Shokudaikiri, the team’s leader, is the first one to approach them, his own arm still bleeding through the provisory bandages wrapped around his arm.

“Let’s get him back to the citadel, Tarou-san.”

“I’ll take care of him.”

“But your wounds—“

“Mitsutada.“ He stands up, holding unconscious Jirou in his arms, his gaze unwavering. “Let me do it. Please.”

The next half an hour passes by in a blink of an eye.

When the door finally opens, Tarou is already there, waiting.

“He will be fine.” Yagen comes out of the repairing room, followed by the saniwa. “The General used some of their magic to ease his pain while his body heals… He will be just like new in a few hours.”

The sage comes closer, their robes swishing with every move, and puts their hand on Tarou’s shoulder.

“He wouldn’t mind if you kept him company.”

He doesn’t need to be told twice; with more eagerness than appropriate, especially in the saniwa’s presence, he enters the room.

Jiroutachi is lying on the bed, wearing a simple white yukata, just as white as the bandages covering his chest. He opens his eyes at the sound of the door opening and glances at the newcomer – when his eyes meet Tarou’s, though, he averts his gaze, not sure how to react.

Silence is not something that either of them is used to; before the last argument, they never had a problem with holding a conversation or simply being in each other’s presence. Now, however, every second of hesitation feels like a whole century, and the tension between them becomes unbearable.

Taroutachi closes the distance between them.

Jiroutachi takes a deep breath.

“Tarou, I—“

“That’s not how you should call me,” he interrupts, almost angrily; but a single look at his flushed face already tells Jirou everything.

“……Aniki,” Jirou chokes out, half-laughing, half-crying. “Thank you.”

Taroutachi leans in to press his lips against his brother’s forehead.

“I should be the one thanking you, stupid.”

He stays in the repairing room until Jirou falls asleep, all the time holding his hand. It’s already dark, the only source of light being the soft moonlight sipping through the window, bathing Jirou’s face in a sliver glow.

“Aniki,” he repeats quietly, fingers threading through the other’s silky hair. “Maybe that doesn’t sound so bad.”

You wouldn’t let me see your grit and pain, buried me deep into the shell of you, and the way your bones dug into mine, they creaked with every breath.

"You’ll be okay," you said to me. "I will fix you, you will be okay." You ran the red of your nails over my mouth to stifle my sobs, and I tasted iron on your claws.

What I like about themHe's so pretty and cool, but at the same time like really badass some times and by the end of the story he really cares about his team and just ughhhhhh he's developed so much.

What I dislike about themHmmmmm...the fact that he still wears his dumb earring during basketball games. That's a safety hazard people have gotten entire chunks of their ear ripped off kise don't be dumb. Favourite momentEvery time he cries. I love seeing my baby crying. (But I also really like the bit at the very end of the Seirin v Kaijou game where he passes back to Kasamatsu when he could have dunked because he realizes that relying on teammates is something that is okay to do. Especially since a pass back to his teammates is what lost them the Touou v Kaijou game)

Least favourite momentI really can't think of one........

A situation with this character that I want to see explored moreJust him being bros and hanging out with the other kaijou babies. Or any other characters. but mostly the kaijou babiesAn interesting AU for this characterFUCK ABSOLUTELY ANyTHING. Ummmmmmmm...I like AUs where he gets permanently injured and then has to deal with that. Or merpeople AUs. 3: Which anime made you laugh the hardest? Probably Daily Lives of High School Boys. It’s absolutely ridiculous and I love it. 

6: List your top [5] anime OSTs1. Zankyou no Terror (it’s such a great soundtrack just pure perfection)2. Tsuritama (everything is so cute and makes me want to go sailing or on an adventure or something.)3. Kuroko no Basket 4. Baccano! 5. Free! (okay so I don’t listen to many soundtracks but I did listen to part of the free season one ost and it was good.)

7: Have you ever watched an entire anime in one sitting?I’ve watched a lot of 11 or 12 episode shows in one sitting. AnoHana, Daily Lives of High School Boys, and No. 6 are the first ones that come to mind.

22: You get to have a harem of [6] anime characters of your choice, who do you choose?Okay, well Oikawa and Barnaby first of all. And Sousuke and Kise. Iwaizumi too. This is so hard how am I supposed to choose just six. The last spot goes to….umm…Kasamatsu-senpai. (I am sorry everyone that almost made it but didn’t. I love all of you too).

32: If you could make a game for an anime of your choice, what would it be and why? A really relaxed and laid back Natsume Yuujinchou game would be so cool. Like, you go around helping all the yokai and your friends and it would be so cool
