I remember watching the Duke Ellington Sacred Concerts over WNET just as I was becoming acquainted with jazz in the 1960s. Tom Cunniffe brings a complete survey of these spiritually swinging concerts complete with visual examples in his jazzhistoryonline website. Highly recommended. Hallelujah!

The Story Behind Timme Rosenkrantz and his Fabled 1945 Town Hall Concert

Tom Cunniffe revisits the great 1945 Town Hall concert produced and recorded by Timme Rosenkrantz and later issued in various forms on Commodore Records (and, of course, a Mosaic set). When I was first discovering jazz, I heard the Don Byas-Slam Stewart duets from this concert. They floored me and remain some of my favorite performances in jazz.

Shelly Manne and His Men: the Early Years

Tom Cunniffe explores the first chapter in the history of Shelly Manne And His Men, focusing on the superb quintet with Joe Gordon, Richie Kamuca and Russ Freeman that was captured generously in five volumes recorded live at the Black Hawk in San Francisco. This is a wonderful history of one of Los Angeles’s most important and longest lasting bands.
