my fav part of 2014 is definitely when Tom Derickx interviewed Will Arnett and Megan Fox and they didn't get his sense of humour and they used it to boost their egos because they thought they were so smart and this footballer was the dumbest thing to grace the earth for asking questions like "Was TMNT based on real life?" like it's a joke DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND IT'S A JOKE YOU'RE LOOKING KIND OF STUPID AND PRETENTIOUS HERE GOD HELP YOU HOLLYWOOD STARS

Draft & Trade History: Pick #63 in the 2010 National Draft

I have to admit, for a player that has played only a couple of pre-season matches, Tom Derickx is certainly one hyped player! Derickx arrived at Punt Road after being selected with the 63rd pick in the 2010 National Draft as a mature aged recruit. Tom immediately had Tiger fans excited when during a pre-season game against Collingwood he showed signs of being a strong marking ruckman who had some mobility about him.

Standing at 201cm tall, Derickx is certainly has the size to be a ruckman, but with that size comes considerable strain on the body, something that Derickx found out for himself last when he pulled up sore with a heel complaint before the home and away season had even begun. Derickx managed to work his way back to health and managed to play seven games for the Coburg Tigers. Just when it looked like we might see Tom in the Richmond side he broke his ankle playing for Coburg, effectively ending his season.

Being 24 years old means that Derickx needs to show something sooner rather than later to entrench his spot on the list. This pre-season we have seen Tom training as a key forward where the Tigers hope to use his size, mobility and strong marking to overwhelm his opponents. All reports suggest that Tom is training well in this position and because of this, perhaps Derickx is a smokey for a Round 1 debut against Carlton.

Injuries permitting, I believe it is quite reasonable that we will see Derickx play a bunch of games in 2012. The sheer size of Tom means that he is going to be a difficult player to match up on in the forward line for Tigers. With the sub rule introduced last year he may make the ideal forward who pinch hits in the ruck, or conversely, a ruckman who pinch hits up forward. The only thing that may hold back a Derickx debut is a top heavy forward line. With the likes of Riewoldt and Vickery being permanent residents of the Richmond forward 50, is it possible to fit another tall player into the forward setup?

When/if Derickx debuts for Richmond there are certainly going to be plenty of Tiger fans keeping an eye on the big fella. From the moment Tom entered Punt Road there has been an air of expectation that followed. With Richmond crying out for quality talls I can definitely see Derickx getting a start some point in the season. To have a successful season I believe Derickx needs to play at least 6-8 games this season for Richmond. In these games, if Tom can even somewhat closely meet the expectations that have followed him then it is very possible that we will have another quality player on our hands.

Draft & Trade History:  Pick 63, 2010 National Draft

Tom is new to Richmond in 2011 after being snapped up by the Tigers with the 63rd pick in the National Draft. Derickx comes to Richmond as a mature aged recruit after spending his 2010 season playing with Claremont. Standing at over two metres tall, Derickx will provide Richmond with a big bodied but mobile ruckman.

The extra size that comes with being a mature aged recruit means that we may very well see young Tom get some senior action in 2011. With all of Richmond’s ruck stocks being so young, Derickx has a real shot at staking his claim for the number one ruck role. A solid pre-season will certainly help his cause as he will have plenty of competition from the likes Graham, Browne and Vickery. The new substitute rule will also hinder Derickx’s cause as it is likely that only one ‘pure’ ruckman will be picked. Having said this, thanks to Tom’s mobility  I find it extremely likely that we will see him in the yellow and black at some point in 2011, it is just a matter of when.
