The Ferryman Playbill, signed by Laura Donnelly (Caitlin Carney)
I don’t normally write reviews of shows I see, but I’ve decided to make an exception for The Ferryman. This play is by far the most beautiful non-musical I have ever seen on Broadway, and it may very well be the best overall production (including musicals). So, in short, this show receives a 10/10 score, and if you ever have the chance, you should go see it. And hurry, it’s closing in July.
The entire play takes place in one room, and wow is that set done well. It feels so much like a real home. Another random thing I noticed is the fantastic lighting. Very little of it seemed like it dramatic and unrealistic: the lighting coming from the one window was perfect throughout the day, and when the moon was out, it was amazing.
The use of metaphors and symbols was so, so great. They are thrown in so subtly, but they recur in a way that makes them obvious by the end of the play.
And last, I’ll talk about the ending. What I think would be considered the ending took place in around 60 seconds, and during that one minute, the other 194 minutes of the play come back and slap you in the face. Suddenly, absolutely everything makes sense. Without those final 60 seconds, the play would’ve been fine. But the end is what makes this play spectacular.
Essentially, see The Ferryman.
