John Steinbeck was particularly enamored with the performance of Henry Fonda as Tom Joad, feeling that he perfectly encapsulated everything he wanted to convey with this character. The two became good friends. Indeed Fonda did a reading at Steinbeck's funeral.
HENRY FONDA in THE GRAPES OF WRATH (1940) | dir. John Ford

House Greyjoy
House Tully
House Arryn
House Martell
House Tyrell

Ways to approach the poll if the character isn’t a royal:
If you think they’d be from a smaller house, go with the Great House that that smaller house is sworn to (ex: House Manderly —> vote Stark)
They don’t have to be a nobleperson, they can be someone working for the house or being ruled by them. Roles could be a sworn-sword, a septa, a butcher, a blacksmith, or even a lowly peasant.
You can consider the region itself. For example, if you feel the character would be from Dorne, pick House Martell.
You can consider the personality of the character. For example, if your character is all about honor, then consider either House Arryn or House Stark.
Last, but not least, be creative with it! For example, there was a comment I read that the character who was the subject of the poll would be pulling a Littlefinger, so they went with either Lannister or Tyrell as that would be that character’s target houses.
when i read the grapes of wrath during my junior year i imagined the joads singing Apples to the Core (specifically tom joad as applejack, ruthie + winfield as apple bloom, ma joad as granny smith) and jim casy singing pinkie pie's part, and it made my reading experience more fun even when there were the grim deaths
I'm over talking about Brandon Sklenar being Batman. Let's talk about Brandon Sklenar being the next Tom Joad. No one has been one since Henry Fonda. Henry Fonda was 35 when he was Tom Joad. Brandon is 35. Ramin Bahrani (the guy behind 99 Homes, who was Oscar-nominated for best adapted screenplay for The White Tiger) and Brandon started following each other on Instagram. Ramin Bahrani is working on the script for a Grapes of Wrath TV Series, which he is going to direct and produce, too. It was a delulu hope because that's an award season type of role. But Ramin Bahrani shared Brandon's new Flaunt shoot in his Instagram stories yesterday. Cue me getting way more delulu about this now. I'm all for it. He would eat it up. Let's do it. I know nothing is official until it's actually announced as a project, but Brandon just bitched in the Flaunt interview about his type-cast "hyper-masculine Hemmingway-ass characters" resume. Let the man eat, please.
