If you’re going to be anywhere near Frankfurt, Germany on June 1st, Tom Mes, writer of Unchained Melody: The Films Of Meiko Kaji, is giving a 1 1/2 hour lecture on the films of Meiko Kaji (梶芽衣子) as part of the Nippon Connection festival.

On his Facebook page, Mes described the event as “a scenic tour of Kaji's career, with particular focus on the lesser-known but equally enthralling sights”.

I don’t know if the talk is going to be available online anywhere afterwards, but I really fucking hope so.

Agitator: The Cinema of Takashi Miike, by Tom Mes

By focusing on Takashi Miike’s oeuvre (up to 2002′s Deadly Outlaws: Rekka, since the book was published in 2003), Tom Mes is able to comprehensively chart the evolution of Miike’s style, techniques and ideas in a way that Jason Zinoman’s Shock Value could not. Mes draws from Miike’s biographical and cultural context to analyze Miike’s films, and the points are made concisely, if a bit repetitively. However, because the book focuses on one director who works with a consistent set of themes, the analysis can feel repetitive as Mes explores the way Miike handles those themes from one film to the next.
