Last night, I had a dream that I was talking to someone (I have no idea who) about Joss Whedon and how much I love his work (despite whatever negativity may be surrounding him regarding how today’s faux-woke feminism doesn’t jive with Joss’s particular brand of feminism, or whatever [I don’t really know what tumblr’s beef is with him, but I have an idea]) and then I was excitedly (not excitedly, but more like, hey, this is a cool thing, I think) sharing that I recently discovered that Joss’s father, Tom Whedon, was a writer/producer on Golden Girls in the later seasons, and isn’t it a small fandom world after all, and anyway, the point is, I don’t know who I was talking to in the dream but I am now sharing with all of you that I recently discovered this and isn’t that cool?

Tom Whedon, Father of Joss Whedon, Dies Aged 83

Tom Whedon - veteran writer and producer for television, and father of filmmaker Joss Whedon - has passed away at the age of 83.

Born in New York in August 1932, Whedon worked on a number of popular American TV shows with a particular focus on children’s programming, including ‘Captain Kangaroo’ and ‘The Electric Company.’

Later, more adult work included ‘The Golden Girls.’

As well as Joss Whedon, Tom is survived by his four other sons Jed, Zack, Samuel and Matthew.

It was Jed (best known as producer of TV’s ‘Agents of SHIELD’) who broke the news of their father’s death in an Instagram post:

“Thomas Avery Whedon, 1932 - 2016. We said goodbye to our dad yesterday. He passed away in relative peace surrounded by his wife, all five of his boys and their loved ones. 

“He gave us the gift of his warmth and humor. We miss him terribly. Love you dad.”

Our condolences to the Whedon family, and all those who were close to Tom.

We're saddened to learn that Tom Whedon, father of Joss Whedon and writer of the Henson special "Hey, Cinderella" has passed away.

Tom Whedon passed away yesterday. 

I only wish I could be as lucky as him to have a son like Joss. Love and condolences to the whole family.

Tom Whedon wrote the episodes for the Golden Girls. His son is Joss Whedon. So many things make sense now.

The amazing moment when you realize that Joss Whedon, the writer of awesome movies and tv shows like the Avengers and Firefly, is the son of the writer Tom Whedon, the writer of the most amazing tv show, Golden Girls. OMFG. Day made.

I enjoy watching The Golden Girls and seeing the name 'Tom Whedon' at the beginning of episodes.
