Ryan Tomayko has put together a great presentation outlining the very basics of HTTP caching. The diagrams are perfect, and explain exactly how simple `Cache-Control` headers work, and how they become even more powerful in conjunction with ETags. There's nothing in this presentation that's not in his older essay "[Things Caches Do][tcd]", but it's worth sifting through if you need a refresher.
