There was another ending to this story.

In a world where she had more value for herself, in a world where she even thought of making more selfish decisions, Takiko Okuda could have lived.

In a world where he were less brashly brave and stubbornly loyal, Tomite could have lived.

In a world where he were less self-sacrificing and would have been willing to persist without Tomite, Hikitsu would have lived.

But they never stood a fucking chance. Because these characters - everything they are, strengths and weaknesses and emotions and loves - make them who they are. And there was no other way that this story could have gone. They were doomed from the beginning.

But if they were different people, they never would have saved Hokkan.

I'm still pretty angry over the fact that none of the Genbu warriors apologized to Takiko for all the horrible things they said to her when they were trying to get her to go back to her world.

Like yeah, Takiko brushed it off because she knew they were only saying those things to get her to leave, but still, even if she didn't expect one or demand one, an apology was still deserved.

They broke her heart. They used her worst fears against her knowing it would break her heart. They told her they didn't believe in her, that she wasn't needed, that they didn't need her, and then Uruki came in telling her they would never be able to be together and I just??? Her face in these scenes is just heartbreaking and it infuriates me that she didn't get a real apology from any of them.

Yeah, they did it to save her life, but they broke her heart to do it, they used her worst fears against her, and showing them being sad about the stuff they said to her is not good enough for me. Takiko deserved a real, heartfelt apology from her friends.

I'm rereading Fushigi Yuugi Genbu Kaiden (a favourite manga of mine) for the first time in years. I love all these characters but my predominant thought is "RIP Tomite you'd have loved kissing Hikitsu on the mouth"
