Review: Tom Jackson shares most intimate song to date with 'Lost Myself'

Solo artist Tom Jackson finds himself inspired most by artists like The 1975, Harry Styles and Shawn Mendes. Yet unlike most who look up to their favourites, Tom's style doesn't scream a replica or reinvention of their work in any way, instead truly showcasing unfiltered authenticity of Tom himself. Writing, playing and recording all his own work is another demonstration of the depth poured into perfecting each single release, leaving them to flourish with his own delicate touches.

After playing his first ever headline show last month, Tom now finds himself with an ever-growing fanbase that currently sits at a solid 200 monthly Spotify listeners. At only 20, Tom demonstrates a solid mastery of his sound and the potential to go far, with latest release 'Lost Myself' only furthering our belief he's destined to make music for life.

Kept stripped back to the basics, 'Lost Myself' isn't sugar-coated or left easily digestible, the minimal soundscape puts you face-to-face with lyricism that's made to be heard. Gorgeously delicate guitar strums echo out, paired only with an incredibly subtle bassline and the occasional vocal harmonisation. Such a simplistic instrumental format can easily miss the mark, but Tom savours every moment, pouring out every emotion vocally as the listener is carried along by such beautiful electric guitar plucks and strums.

Self-described to be one of the most 'raw and honest' songs written by Tom, 'Lost Myself' is a track that bears the heaviest-heart unapologetically on his sleeve. We're left to unpack each word and emotion for ourselves, as the instrumentals leave us no escape, and it's so brilliantly heartbreaking. Written in one night only, this lyrical blurt evidently comes straight from the soul and professes every emotion Tom had left buried inside. As we learn more about his mental health struggles and the difficulty of losing touch with your own identity, there is an underlying message of hope that time will heal these wounds. We left 'Lost Myself' feeling heavy, but touched by Tom's trueness to painting a realistic picture of mental health struggles. The most poignant line, 'you know my name, but that doesn't mean you know me too' spoke volumes to us and perfectly encapsulates how well Tom has penned the narrative of this breathtaking release.
