One: "I stick with real things"
"Thomas, hurry up you're going to be late for school." I yell into my younger brother's room. Walking to the kitchen, I fix my hair in the hallway mirror.
"God woman give me a minute!" He yells back down the hallway.
"Tom I swear to god, I will make you take the bus. Hurry up, I have work." I grab my breakfast off the counter and head toward the door.
"You know I could just drive myself" He shrugs at me pulling on his beanie meeting me at the door.
"With what car?" I open the door handing tom a pastry off my plate, locking the door behind us as he enters the passenger side door.
"What time are you off tonight? Jack wanted to come over to work on our project, but I don't think he actually wants to come over to work on anything. He just keeps talking about the brownies you made last week..." Tom rambles on about any and everything he can think of.
As we pull into the parking lot of his school, he grabs his bag and water bottle.
"You got everything?"
"Yep! Wait when are you off?" He stops getting out of the car and looks at me.
"I get off at seven thirty, I'll be home by eight."
"Ugh that means I'm walking home. its like four degrees outside right nowww." He whines as he puts on his backpack.
"Sorry, I'm covering for Maddie, her son got sick. I'll bring you home something if you want."
"Chocolate chip pancakes thank you."
"Will do. I love you, have a good day."
"I love you too. I'll see you when you get home." He smiles and closes the door.
Im dead on my feet. I've had at least four tables at all time since 7:30 this morning. As I leaned against the hostess station, Mara rubs my head, offering a sympathetic look.
"I mean, look at it this way, you've made almost $200 in tips this morning." She tries to cheer me up, and for a moment, it works.
"Yeah, but my break isnt for another hour and a half" 11:25. I sigh as I look uo at the clock on the wall.
*ding*
'can i come to the diner after school' 'i have hw and i dont wanna do it at home'
I smile fondly at my phone, typing my response.
'Sure, ill take you home so you dont have to walk home after.'
"Who's got you smiling during work hours? I thought that was physically impossible" I roll my eyes at Mara.
"Come on, you know the only person I text is tom." I place my phone back in my apron as the bell above the door opens.
"Dude im telling you, the food here is so good." I look up to see Teddy, one of our regulars.
"Oh! Ted! Hi!" Mara spluttered out. I giggle at her pathetic attempt to speak casually.
"Oh hey! How are you guys?" He smiles at us, for the first time this interaction, I look past him at the person he was talking with. He was a tall brunette man with mutton chops and a mustache.
"Who's your friend Teddy?" I smirk at him.
"Oh! This is Jay, he just moved here, so I'm showing him to all the best places in town." He explained to us.
"And you started here?" Mara jokes, and I hit her arm gently.
"Well, I'm YN, I'll be your waitress today. Ill also show you to your table." I grab two menus and show them to a table by the window. "I assume you want your usual Ted?" I place the menus down.
"You know me so well." He smiles up at me.
"Ill give you a minute with the menu while I get Ted's coffee." I smile at Jay and begin to walk away.
"I'll also have a black coffee." He says quietly, looking up from his menu.
"Great, I'll be right back with those." I walk to the coffee maker, and Mara meets me halfway.
"Ugh I wish I could be a waitress." She sighs at me grabbing two clean mugs and a few cream packets to put in a bowl.
"You were a waitress, remember? You quit after some guy made a rude remark about your ponytail." I rolled my eyes pouring the coffee and grabbing a tray for them.
"Yeah yeah, but then you get actually good guys like Ted! I mean, has he ever said anything even remotely sexual toward you?"
"God of course not. Come on, you don't want to be a waitress you just want to be Ted's waitress" She scoffs, walking back to the hostess stand, ignoring what I said.
I walk back to the table and place the coffees down.
"Alright big guy you ready to order?" I ask looking at Jay.
"Uh yeah.. I'll take the chocolate chip pancakes with hash browns." I nod while writing down his order.
"Good choice, I'll get that right in for ya'." I smile at the two of them, walking to the kitchen to put in their orders.
*Ding!*
'Wait can you call me out? i dont feel goof doog good'
I look at the clock on the wall, 12:15
'Yeah, ill call you out my break is soon so just wait in the office ill pick you up and bring you to the diner.'
I look up as the bell above the door rings again. Letting out a deep sigh, i put my phone back in my pocket, trying to recompose myself.
"You have a four top at table seven"
"Thanks Mar." I smile at her before going to greet the coustomers.
Ted POV
As YN walked away I turned back to Jay.
"So? How was your first night in town?"
"Fine, my moving van got stuck in Indiana, so I had to sleep on the floor." He grumbled.
"Well we can go get you a blanket or something, you got in pretty late last night." I take a sip of my coffee, watching YN run around the dinner serving the sudden influx of customers.
"Here is your American Breakfast, and your Chocolate Chip Pancakes! just let me know if you need anything!" YN Stops at our table with our food.
We both utter a 'thank you' and begin to eat.
"Dude how the fuck can you eat your eggs raw?" Jay scowls at my plate.
"They aren't raw! Just sunny side up!"
"You're going to die from that."
"Says the one eating chocolate chip pancakes? What are you 6?"
"No, Im 8. And hey, at least my food is cooked all the way through!" He shrugs
"Whatever man." We both continue eating in silence. Eventually, Mara drops off our check.
"What happened to YN?" Jay asks, looking around.
"Oh, she had to pick up her younger brother from school, he's not feeling well." She says, handing me the check.
"Shell be back soon, like 15 minutes. Plus she still gets all her cash tips, I just hold them at the hostess station." She winks at us, walking away.
"Hm, I hope she's okay." I say as I place 70$ in cash in the checkbook.
"You ready to go?" I ask Jay, standing to put on my jacket.
"Hm., Yeah lets go." He stands up zipping his big winter coat. I smirk and wave at Mara as we leave.
"So the hostess?" Jay asks as we leave.
"Oh stop dude" I shove him playfully.
YN POV
After picking tom up, I give him some Tylenol that we keep in the back for emergencies, can a cup of tea.
"Im sorry for making you pick me up." He looks up at me tearfully.
"Tom don't worry, I'll be right back, i have to check on Mara real quick. I promise I'll be right back." He nods at me and i walk over to the hostess stand.
"Sorry for leaving, I'll make sure all my checks and tables are completed and cleaned." I grab all the checkbooks and head to the cash register.
"Your all good girl, only Teddy and his new friend left. you know Miss Fraizier, she sits with her son for alt least an hour and a half." He follows closely behind me as i count out change from Ted's bill.
"Here, he left me a 40$ tip, so heres 20$" I hand her four fives.
"What no, come on, I was just doing what any good coworker would do."
"Still, you've had my back so many times this week." I smile at her, curling her hands around the bills.
"Well thank you. You really don't have to do this."
"But I want to. You're my best friend, and I know you'd do the same if you were in my shoes." She tears up, pulling me into a hug, and I hug her back. "Now I gotta go check on Tom."
