The Tomorrow War

The Tomorrow War, staring Chris Pratt, tells the story of humanity’s time-travel based last efforts to overthrow a mysterious alien plague but travelling back into the past (the modern day for us) to recruit soldiers through conscription. Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) is a former soldier turned teacher with daddy issues, the sort of stereotypical action hero that Hollywood churns out regularly. The former combat experience is shoehorned in to explain their skills in a crisis while family issues allow for the man to be independent to a fault. It’s a forgettable messy jumble of plot which hand waves past the science and feels like two films have been Frankenstein’s monstered together from the cutting room floor. I find Chris Pratt is often hard to take seriously in serious roles given his acting style and therefore his casting as Dan Forester felt like a glaring mistake sitting atop a pile of dysfunctionality that leaves the film feeling lost.

However, if taken in the separate parts, the film does have its promising moments. The time-travel based conscription provides an interesting concept that the film fails to fully explore while the Whitespikes, the alien plague, are truly terrifying at times. Scenes from the initial fight after their arrival in the future have the perfect mix of suspense and worldbuilding and are genuinely enjoyable. There is a prolonged sequence as they leave a building that had me on the edge of my seat. Still, once this spectacular fight sequence ends, the rest of the film and the following fights become a mindless slog of special effects and forced emotion. The solution feels overdone and cliche and the ending feels rushed, with many of the emotional arcs being wiped out by a changing of the timeline or the character dying without making meaningful emotional change.

I would recommend this movie to my friends. I would not rewatch this movie.

I'll eat the tuna santa. Dan immediately taking leadership after being given orders is kinda hot. Using the helicopter blades to kill was fun. The female ripping off her arm was pretty awesome. I enjoy this whole snow fight. Taking on this one female is already so badass.

I'd rather fight for the world than a country. The repetition of shits down the stairway would be me. I feel like this could be a spinoff of the Alien franchise somehow.

Dying or being injured because you arrived wrong is terrible.
