20. “ things you said that I wasn’t meant to hear”
--
“Come on,” Laurel says, Laurel who is Laurel but not Felicity’s Laurel, not the right one, who saunters wrong and smiles with cruelty. “Don’t you remember what you said? Don’t be dead, don’t be dead, don’t be-”
“How do you know that?” Felicity says. “I never- I never said that to anyone.”
“You said it to yourself,” Laurel says. “I saw.”
Felicity blinks back tears, pushing up her glasses to rub at her eyes. “You shouldn’t have ever heard that. You’re- That’s an invasion of my privacy.”
Laurel rolls her eyes, brushing her hair over her shoulder. “But you did say it,” Laurel says. “You said, please don’t be dead. And now you have a not-dead Laurel.”
“Not you,” Felicity protests. “I never wanted you.”
“Then you should’ve been careful what you wished for,” Laurel says. “Because here I am.”
