JAMIE MADROX - THE MULTIPLE MAN
normalize sexualizing that old woman without having mommy issues. maybe i don't want to be her pet because i'm traumatized. maybe i want to be her pet because she's hot. you ever think of that.
Big fan of college party animal Ryland “it’s been a long time since I took a pill from a stranger without knowing what it was” Grace who is a notorious menace.
Big fan of high academia Dr Ryland “will call you a staggering waste of carbon” Grace who is a short tempered, egotistical, and kind of a jerk.
Big fan of how Ryland Grace can be both these things but while still having his same fundamental personality as a good person and wet cat.
Big fan of how it’s generally agreed that teaching burned the evil out of him and let his whimsy shine.
Big fan of how it took arguably the most evil and deranged demographic of the human population (thirteen year olds) to turn that man into the best version of himself.
I really really really like this post but I want to make two addendums!
Thirteen year olds aren't that bad (I know you're using hyperbole! Just want to point that out).
Grace is not yet the best version of himself at the start of the story.
I think Grace appeals to a lot of people because he's someone who already started his character development before the story begins - as this post points out, he was Much Worse before he got kicked out of academia and became a teacher. It's interesting to see how his avoidant behaviours, a problem, might have developed as a result of him trying to tamp down his ego/temper behaviours, which were a much bigger problem.
Children and teenagers require you to develop enormous amounts of patience and self-control in order not to traumatise them. When you start teaching you basically have to accept that at some point you're going to accidentally hurt a child, because you don't know when to push and when to ease off and when to open up and when to shut down conversations. Children and teenagers are so so so fragile, and practical experience is the only way to get better at raising them. I know for a fact Grace probably has sworn in front of a child, has lost his temper with a rowdy class, has misjudged when to invite a kid to open up and when to leave them alone. It's inevitable.
I don't think Grace ever fully dealt with his temper or his ego, and that's why those parts of him come out during stressful moments. But as a teacher, he was forced to put those things aside so that he didn't hurt his kids. Say what you will about his character flaws but he genuinely loved them, and he tried to change himself for the better for them. He stops swearing because he can't do it in front of the kids, so he needs to take swearing out of his vocab entirely. He fucked up his life by losing his temper, so now he's the cool chill teacher who plays the lava game to make learning fun.
On the other hand, there's a flip side to developing these repressed behaviours. He got kicked out of his life's passion because he wrote a risky paper, so now he avoids risk and takes the safest path. He's tethered to the world but it's easy to cut those ties when needed. Teaching is perfect for that.
It's the fact that you're essentially told not to love your kids. You're not supposed to care about them too much or become attached to them. For understandable reasons - grooming, playing favourites - but at the same time, you also witness parents outright abusing their children and you are powerless to stop them. Teaching is the perfect vehicle for Grace to express his love of science and feel like part of a community, like he's doing good, without any expectation of ongoing commitment, and no risk to his personal safety. (Well, that actually might not be true for American teachers, but I don't want to speak on their behalf in that regard.)
I don't think the kids were purely a cowardly excuse for him to avoid the mission. I think he genuinely missed them and missed the sense of purpose and community he had with them. But he missed the safety of teaching too! They were instrumental in leading him towards self-development, but they weren't the finish line. Grace became a better, more self-actualised person once he found Rocky, developed a committed relationship he was prepared to genuinely risk himself for, and recognised that the halfway-done development he'd already undergone was incomplete.
Anyway just my little onion, hope you don't mind OP.
stratt holding everyone at a distance so she can retain authority, so she can focus on her job, so she can pay the price of saving humanity. grace holding everyone at a distance so he doesn't have to risk anything, so he doesn't become important, so he can dodge the shrapnel when things blow up. stratt fucked up, connected with the guy she has to strap to a rocket. grace fucked up, trusted the one person who can force him to reach his potential.

has this been done?
Spin the wheel. That's who's trying to kill you.
Spin the wheel again. That’s who’s trying to protect you.
(If you have zero idea about a name you got, spin until you see someone you recognize.)
Are you safe?
Absolutely not. I'm dead. 100% dead.
I might stay alive, but it'll be a really close thing.
I'll take some hits, for certain, but I should be okay in the end.
A few attacks might get through, but nothing concerning.
The attacker might be able to get in one lucky hit. If that.
I am the opposite of worried. I'm 100% safe.
…Look. I've tried picturing this. But I honestly don't know how to answer.
(I've run this poll twice before, expanding it significantly for the second run. With about a year passed since that second run, I thought it was time to add another couple hundred names to the list and have another go.)
happy final’s week, have some new x-kids!
bonus sketch under cut
Eva Stratt the woman that you are <333
For the first time ever, I can offer prints cuz some ppl asked for when i showed the wip off lol. You can get it here!
You’re out of touch, I’m out of time.
Eva Stratt I’m sorry for what you had to do 😔
away it goes
thinking about eva stratt crafting a coffin for her friends. the very best coffin, full of every piece of pirated media the entire world has to offer. crafted for maximum comfort, this coffin, with every bit of authority available to her, which is all of it.
and then thinking about all the people who call her cold or uncaring or clinical about what she has to do to save earth. eva stratt, who had silly t-shirts and vodka and favorite meals stored in the Hail Mary and treated with the same level of importance as the finely tuned equipment and the centrifuge the entire planet relies on for salvation.
and then thinking about eva stratt nodding and saying, “yeah, I’m pretty awful. that’s why i’m in charge” with a neutral expression and even believing it. as if crafting the most beautiful coffin and homage to her soon-to-be dead friends won’t haunt her always.
thinking about eva stratt being the first person on the “eva stratt is a monster” train, welcoming ryland grace aboard and knowing she believed in him more than anyone else.
it’s fine, really it’s fine and normal and eva stratt makes beautiful coffins for the people and things she cares about.
and nothing at all bad happened
watching you watching me
eva stratt makes me so fucking unwell because. imagine months of making hard call after hard call because you gotta, because someone's gotta, and this time it has to be you. and she keeps strong despite it, she keeps going. then the fucking pit in her stomach she must have felt, when she realized that Grace was her only option left. the horror of that realization. having to steel herself for the task. only to have him beg and plead and cry. her friend. how did she not throw up. how did she manage it. eva stratt the woman ever, how many people out there would have the sheer force of will, to be able to pull the trigger on their friend to save all humanity. and she didn't even know if it would work. she didn't know. for years. she didn't know if murdering her friend was worth the gamble. she just had to believe in him. fucking hell.
