The massive eruption of a Tongan volcano this year released a record amount of water into the Earth's atmosphere, enough to temporarily warm the globe, NASA scientists say.

The massive eruption of a Tongan volcano this year released a record amount of water into the Earth's atmosphere, enough to temporarily warm the globe, NASA scientists say.

The January 15 eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha-apai volcano, sent more than 58,000 Olympic-size swimming pools' worth of water vapour into the stratosphere, according to a study published in the Geographical Research Letters' last month.

Researchers estimate the underwater eruption in the South Pacific expelled 146 teragrams (1 teragram equals a trillion grams) of water vapour, approximately 10 per cent of the water already present in the atmospheric layer 12 to 53 kilometres above the Earth's surface.

That amount was nearly four times the level of water vapour emitted by the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines, said the space agency.

Whilst NASA have previously recorded other volcanic eruptions that have injected significant amounts of water vapour into the stratosphere, those events had dissipated quickly.

This time, they believe the excess water vapour from the Tonga eruption could remain airborne for several years and potentially warm the Earth's surface.

The extra water vapour could influence "atmospheric chemistry" that could "temporarily worsen the depletion of the ozone layer" and also influence surface temperatures, but not enough to worsen climate change, the agency said in a release.

"Massive volcanic eruptions like Krakatoa and Mount Pinatubo typically cool Earth’s surface by ejecting gases, dust, and ash that reflect sunlight back into space," NASA said. Scientists are scrambling to piece together an unprecedented cascade of events that led to and followed a volcanic eruption in Tonga.

"In contrast, the Tonga volcano didn’t inject large amounts of aerosols into the stratosphere, and the huge amounts of water vapour from the eruption may have a small, temporary warming effect, since water vapour traps heat.

I have been waiting for Nova to cover the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption of Jan 2022.

(There was already a fascinating preliminary video from the NIWA science team last year.)

I was initially drawn to the record-setting loud bang of this eruption, which reminded me of Krakatoa's colossal 1883 explosion.

Also there's some indications that so much water blasted into the normally-dry troposphere it disrupted the southern hemisphere's climate, causing Australia's floods.

Finally, I've wondered if the c. 1620bce Thera eruption that destroyed the Minoan seaports was comparable. If so, this gives us insight into what happened. I'm especially curious whether it did the water-in-troposphere thing, because it deposited less ash across the Med than expected, just as Hunga Tonga did, so scientists had concluded that other than massive tsunamis it couldn't have affected the Minoans that much. But WAIT — now we have a new mechanism for climate disruption that leaves very little chemical footprint.
