TONY LIMA TALKS SAVE DADE'S ANNUAL HALLOWEEN BALL: ARMAGEDDON

Antwyone Ingram: How will Armageddon differ from last year’s Hellrotika? Tony Lima: We had three really great years with Hellrotika, but one of my goals was to bring SAVE Dade’s mission and the importance of SAVE Dade in the community to light with every event that we put on. And I really thought it was important to go back to the original name of the event, SAVE Dade’s Halloween Ball, which is the name we will move forward with – every year with a new theme. Armageddon is a great theme, it’s basically the beginning of a new era and I think that marks my new era as executive director of SAVE Dade and, at the same time, gives way to a new version of the event that everyone has grown to know and love for 19 years. This year, as you know, our pre-party is the VIP offering called the Luminary Awards. I wanted people to understand what we were about and that was really the reason for putting emphasis on the mission focus and going back to the original name of the event.

AI: As executive director of SAVE Dade, why do you feel an event such as the annual Halloween Ball is so important to the community? TL: I think it’s a great opportunity for the community to get together and celebrate in unison. We’ve been doing this party for 19 years, and as you know, it started as a small house party in Belle Meade that has turned into an event that welcomes more than 1,000 people every single year. So I think it’s a great time for the community to get together and celebrate in the name of equality – which is what we do at SAVE Dade; we are the defenders and promoters of equality in South Florida.

AI: Why do you feel it is important to recognize four young community leaders for their dedication and commitment to equality during this year’s Luminary Awards? TL: One of the things I wanted to do from the get go when taking the reins at SAVE Dade was to begin to recognize the young people in the community who are doing amazing things. Every year, we have a signature event (our other fundraiser called Champions of Equality) where we recognize leaders in the community, political figures and people that are well into their careers doing really wonderful things. But I think that we need to start at the other end of the spectrum, because there are a lot of talented hard working young people in the community that are doing great things in their own right. So I think that it’s important to recognize these young leaders so they can continue to grow with us. And it’s also important to our Young Guardian’s Society which is our young professionals fundraising group.

AI: Can you share with our readers the role of the Young Guardian’s Society in correlation to SAVE Dade? TL: We meet monthly, we try to offer different types of events – whether social, professional or lectures. It offers great opportunities for young LGBT people to get together and connect from a professional perspective. We help them expand their networks, social circles and at the same time help SAVE Dade raise much needed funds to further support our mission and the hard work that we do.

AI: In previous years, we have seen performances by the House of Ebony, among others. Will there be any special performances this year? What are guests in store for? TL: This year we have DJ Tracy Young, who is an internationally known DJ who has produced for such artists as Madonna, Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue. This year, since we are branding a brand new event, so to speak, we wanted some star power. Tracy is very popular and very dedicated to the community. There will be some surprise performances; there’s a very strong theatrical focus on this year’s event. I don’t want to give away too much but there will be an alien attack, there will be really great performances by some locals that you know and love, there will be great dancers on stage. We’ve taken the existing event and amped it up as much as possible, giving it a higher production value, adding more excitement to the party everyone knew; we also added an open bar.

AI: For those who are unable to attend Armageddon, how can they contribute to SAVE Dade’s cause? TL: They can donate on our website; we love the support. We are the only organization in South Florida actively fighting for LGBT rights and for human rights in general.

AI: Is there anything else you would like to share with Wire Magazine readers? TL: I think Wire Magazine is a very important magazine because it does put focus on the Beach, so I think that for us, it is very important for us to have our message in Wire Magazine. Wire has always been supportive of the ball and SAVE Dade’s initiative, year after year, and we just want to get the word out to as many people as possible about this fantastic event. Where else can you get an international star DJ, open bar, and a thousand fantastic, sexy people at a party with amazing costumes? I will say, arrive early; a lot happens after 10:30.
