Leaning in closer, Wade reaches down to undo Taskmaster’s belt, Tony doesn’t stop him this time, instead his own hands reach over to hold Wade’s hips, pulling him closer. They hadn’t been alone together in a while, it was exciting for him, reminding Tony of when they were younger and more reckless with each other.
He liked when they’d fight which eventually led to this. Wade leaning into him, hands squeezing his thighs as he unclips his belt, his lips pressing down on his neck. Tony’s eyes close, he’s ready for what’s next.
Wade’s breath tickled his ear as he whispered.
“I think you make me a better person.”
It’s not what Tony wanted to hear, putting a complete halt to his arousal. Now he’s frustrated and irritated with how Wade will always find the worst time to speak.
Tony tugs the cowl back over his head. Shoving Wade back as he grabbed his belt to clip it back on. “It was a mistake to do this.”
“What did I do?” Wade stammered, confused with the sudden shift in his behavior.
“It’s what you said.”
“What’s wrong with what I said? I was praising you.”
Tony shakes his head disapprovingly, walking further from Wade, a hand covering his face.
“Save your gratitude, I don’t want it. Why’d you have to go and ruin this for me?”
Wade’s insulted, he’s not sure what he had done to have made Tony so irritable this time, he was trying to be earnest just once with him and now he’s in trouble again.
“You’re so confusing, I thought you’d like to hear how much I appreciate you.”
“I don’t want to hear you say it like that. I’m not good for you.” Tony retorted.
Shaking his head, Wade shrugged, unsure where this was going and what he could do to save this from becoming a fight.
“You are good for me, you have helped me so much with getting my shit together. Making me a better person for Ellie, I thought you’d see it my way.” Wade walks towards him, hoping that Tony wouldn’t run off before he gets the chance to speak.
Tony turned around to face Wade, though it was hard to see the expression, his body did all the talking. Wade could tell that he was serious and defensive.
“No. I don’t. We ain’t good for each other, Wade. Both of us got selfish tendencies and we’re too stubborn to change.” Tony sharply criticized.
Wade’s eyes narrowed, frowning at his reaction. It felt insulting for Tony to attack his character so quickly. After all he’s been doing to change, the last thing he wanted to hear was that Tony, a person he deeply cares for, thinks he’s not a good person.
Wade desperately needs to feel like a good person, otherwise what is he doing all of this for if he can’t really change?
“But… I’m trying to do my best. Be a better father, a better person in general. I’m even trying not to be a mercenary anymore. I’m changing.”
Tony marched up to Wade, driving his finger into his chest.
“And that’s the problem. You keep saying ya wanna be better, do better but you won’t cut it, when things get tough you come crawling back to me. And I’m never gonna help you the way you need it, because that’s bad for business Wade, what good are you to me if you’re not a mercenary?”
These words were beginning to sting in a way that Wade was unfamiliar. He’s heard it all before, of how much he can’t change, how terrible he is, everyone’s lack of faith in him. But to hear it from Tony, with that venomous tone of his, Wade knew that Tony wants to drive in his point. His words are intentionally cruel. He wants to hurt Wade.
And he’s unsure why.
“I’ll let ya down again and again cuz that’s what I do, it’s what I’ve been doing, I sell ya out we fight and then we laugh about it, rinse and repeat. We’ll keep doing this dance til I’m dead.”
Tony laughed weakly, looking to the side, unable to look at Wade. “I don’t even know if you can die.”
Wade feels a lump forming in his throat. It’s getting harder to even breathe. He wants to say something in retaliation, but he’s finding trouble with what to say next.
“And it’s been fun, I’m not gonna pretend it hasn't been. But that’s all we ever were, Wilson. Just fun. And fun don’t last long.” Tony removes his hand from Wade’s chest. Keeping a space between them, his head tilting to the floor again, it’s hard for Tony to face Wade right now. He’s angry, and more importantly, he’s ashamed.
“So yeah, if ya wanna try and better yourself, get it outta yer system, I’ll be here when you relapse. Then we can have fun again. But I ain’t gonna be around to watch you fail, my time is too precious to be wasted on that shit.” Tony leaves the room before giving Wade a chance to respond, as he couldn’t risk staying any longer.
Tony’s not able to relate to Wade anymore. This sudden interest in morality, in bettering oneself after years that he’ll never be able to atone for, Taskmaster can’t support. He convinces himself thst Wade’s wasting everyone’s time again. He can’t believe that Wade will ever truly be a good person, and that’s partly because of his own selfish reasons.
He doesn’t want Wade to change and be better, because that’s not who he fell in love with. That complicates their relationship when they no longer are on the same side of things. Wade was an Avenger once, and Tony thought he had lost him then. If he’s going to be a better person now, where does that leave Tony? He wouldn’t change for anybody. Not even Wade.
And if Wade thinks that he’s somehow making him a better person, then maybe he has changed too. A realization that terrified him more than anything else.
I think Mordo should be punched in the face more often, actually.
