A concept: When Bucky is brought to the tower, he and Tony don’t interact beyond Steve asking if Bucky can stay and Tony uncomfortably saying “Yeah whatever.” But Bucky doesn’t push, even if he wants to apologize for everything, even the things he doesn’t remember.
“He’s not ready for your apology yet,” a pretty lady with red hair tells him gently. “You’ll know when he is.”
“Alright,” Bucky says, unsettled.
This goes on for months, Tony avoiding him--and it must be Tony avoiding him, because he hasn’t been avoiding Tony. (He thinks if Tony blows up on him that he deserves it.) Bucky wonders if he’ll ever be able to apologize.
And then one day, when he’s about to crack open a two-liter of orange soda as he catches up on some hilarious show that Natasha had suggested, he gets--KICKED IN THE FACE?! Bucky’s first instinct is to defend himself until he sees that it’s Tony and then he’s just very confused.
“Don’t open orange soda over my white carpet,” Tony says through gritted teeth, snatching the bottle from him, and stomps out of the common room. Bucky covers his quickly bruising cheek, knowing that the bruising will fade just as fast, as he gapes after him.
“He did that to me, too,” Clint admits. “But I was gonna open grape juice.”
Bucky thinks this... might be good though? Maybe Tony is ready for his apology now? So Bucky cautiously approaches him in the kitchen as he’s making popcorn, trying not to spook him. “Tony?” When Tony grunts to show he’s listening, Bucky continues, “I’m sorry.”
“You should be,” Tony barks, spinning toward him, and Bucky’s face falls. “Why would you ever open orange soda over a white carpet!?”
Bucky stares at him for a very long moment. “...Not... not for the soda?”
“I have no idea what else you should be sorry for so I’m going to continue believing it was about the soda.”
Bucky wanders back into the common room, baffled.
“Yeah, you’ll get used to that feeling,” Bruce assures him. Bucky doesn’t really want to.
