guys it's 4 in the morning and I'm plagued by thoughts but I think I fucking connected the dots. I think I know why gaster/mystery caller/whoever cut spamton off

I call it apostate lover theory

so I was watching this video (ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT VIDEO GO WATCH IF YOU HAVE THE TIME) but to summarize it mentions the theory that spamton was originally going to give tenna the NEO body. and at first, I thought this was a stretch. but...

why DOES tenna know the word NEO?

seriously. as far as I know within the game the ONLY other person besides spamton who talks about the NEO body is swatch, and you could MAYBE extrapolate that the swatchlings and probably queen might know about the NEO body but would have no reason to tell anyone else about it. swatch made it clear that they tried to keep the thing hush hush. and, of course, the obvious person who we KNOW was talking to and working with tenna was spamton who literally prayed to the NEO body nightly while still staying at queen's mansion. he would be the obvious person to tell tenna about it.

why?

why would spamton tell him? why would spamton tell tenna about the NEO body, something he was obsessed with and which we are led to assume he only sought after for himself?

maybe because he did, indeed, want it for tenna, and not himself.

it's important to note that spamton himself says he was never a salesman for the money but for the freedom. particularly freedom from fate.

I can't think of why else spamton would tell him about the NEO body, a body with grand power, created by someone with the desire to be a grand entertainer, which you can upload your consciousness to.

and we know spamton knew of the prophecy, at least the part connected to tenna.

And though people speculate when Spamton knew this, I don't think this is what he was told at the last phone call. Spamton knows so many things about the world of Deltarune that he shouldn't. Parts of the prophecy fit into that. I think he already knew. But wouldn't it tear him apart? Eat him up inside?

Unless he thought that he could circumvent the prophecy by helping Tenna leave TV World.

Spamton spent all his time down there, praying to the NEO body, where he originally found the Shadow Crystal. Why would he be praying, if he was already in communion with a higher being who knew the ins and outs of the world? Almost seems blasphemous. An act of idolatry. Like he was putting his hopes and dreams into the NEO body, hoping it could defy fate. Which is ultimately what he wanted to do once he got the NEO body for himself after losing Tenna.

This is why the phone caller cut him off. Spamton was already defying the natural order, regularly going between dark worlds, promising to teach Tenna technology which would go against his nature. Spamton wanted to defy the natural order just for Tenna. The same man he worked side by side with. Compares himself to. Reminisces about nonstop and wore matching suits with. Who he also wanted to be, which would be so fitting that he took something intended for his partner, who he wanted to be, and took it for himself to try his hand ad vengeance and to show everyone he's better. Wouldn't trying to use the discarded dream of a lightner's desire to be in the spotlight, something basically seen as a sin to emphasize your own feelings over lightners', fit that oh so well?

This is why Spamton is so bitter. This is why he couldn't contemplate kindness or friendship until after being spared in the NEO fight. He tried to love someone so hard it tried to defy the rules of reality as set by the one in charge of this world, for Tenna, and he lost everything because of it and Tenna wrote him off as a liar and a cheat. I would be afraid to think of love as real after that, too.

As the video also points out, there's this moment with Tenna after saying everything is Spamton's fault. This comes right after saying "And where is HE!?" As pointed out, the ellipses here are notable. It could just be a line reaffirming the prior sentences where Tenna is angry, but Toby loves vague ellipses. What if he was saying if only he could get his hands on the NEO body and escape obsolescence, if that's what Spamton had offered him?

I will leave you off with this dialogue from the Spamton NEO fight which may I remind you is full of all sorts of reminiscing about Tenna.

Almost as if he's recalling what he proposed to Tenna. A leap of faith to give him his chance. In a fight where he's trying to rip out Kris' soul for his own... the "I won't force you. I can't. I can't force you." is ever so reminiscent of a caring, genuine question about something significant and important. A life changing decision. A decision to leave together, and never look back. Something Spamton can only conceive of doing for himself now, as an act of vengeance, accomplished through violence.

It wasn't just doomed. Trying to evade being doomed is what destroyed Spamton and their relationship.
