This is completely personal and not meant to be condescending to anyone but I have been trying to follow the Curly Girl Method for 5-7 years and whenever I try to brush up on my steps or check out products, I find the general CGM community a little up tight and getting tighter as years pass.
People out there are desperate not to have frizz. Curly hair has frizz even on its best days and even when there is a lot of frizz I think its cute and natural. Think Janice Joplin. Think about when you’ve just worked out/walked outside and you’re hot and frizzy. What about after-sex hair? Swim season hair? Frizzy is an image. It is okay to be frizzy.
Not to mention that most or all the successful “after pics” are white women. All their curls look the same, European, overstyled and conventional.
Also, people who follow this method sometimes lose their minds about little details. Just because you’re religious to your routine does not mean all steps need to be followed by all people with curly hair. “You’re damaging your hair by brushing it while it’s wet!!”....damaging it as in what? As in making it frizzy (see above) or just causing it not to bunch up into those perfectly separated “second day curls” you see all over those boards. As in causing it to be less uniform in texture? MY hair is not uniform in texture...you say damaging, I say not striving to fit your image of “healthy curls”. And I have been brushing my curly hair wet since always and its shiny and healthy and grows like a weed. I actually saw a thread today in which a girl complained about how people don’t take her seriously when she tells them how to take care of their curly hair...I think maybe people don’t take well to being told their hair needs to be fixed by buying at least 4 products and changing their entire grooming routine.
On my little vaca this weekend I wandered into a perfume boutique and this lady was the coolest. I very much respected her as a perfumer and a person. I noticed she had brushed out, fuzzy waves, dyed two different oranges. And I loved that, I loved that she rocked the brushed out curls. I hate the thought of anyone coming up to someone like that and telling her she needed gel and two different conditioners. She did not need gel.
Just another counter-beauty-culture movement turned into a gigantic beauty product sales campaign/brainwashing thingy.
Ruhumu nadasa bırakmak istiyorum.
