(Inspired primarily by Terminal Sight but also:
- i couldn’t get the boy to kill me (but i wore his jacket for the longest time)
- Write our Names in the Wet Concrete
- youth dipped in folly )
My headcannon is that Michael Shelley spends what feels like FOREVER following that map inside the Distortion’s corridors, esp since time works differently there. So I made a playlist of songs that might fit his oscillating moods/thoughts as he wanders - as he slowly starts to become something not-quite-human.
Some Songs Included:
1. “lovely” by Billie Eilish ft. Khalid (“Oh I hope someday I’ll make it out of here/Even if it takes all night or a hundred years./Need a place to hide, but I can’t find one near/Wanna feel alive outside; I can’t fight my fear.”)
2. “Ghost” by Ingrid Michaelson (“I keep trying to walk/But my feet don’t find the solid ground./It’s like living in a bad dream./I keep trying to scream/But my tongue has finally lost its sound./I’ve got to say goodbye/To the pieces of me that have already died.”)
3. “Medusa” by Kailee Morgue (“She said ‘Mortal one, you’ve been chosen./You’re beautiful, but you’re broken./So hold onto this moment/And fight until you’re hopeless.’/There’s secrets and riddles that live in these walls./There’s ghosts of past heroes, and I hear them call my name.”)
4. “No Time to Die” by Billie Eilish (“Was I stupid to love you?/Was I reckless to help?/Was it obvious to everybody else/That I’d fallen for a lie?/You were never on my side.”)
5. “Waves” by Dean Lewis (“There is a swelling storm/And I’m caught up in the middle of it all./And it takes control/Of the person that I thought I was/The boy I used to know./There is a light in the dark/And I feel it’s warmth/In my hands, in my heart./Why can’t I hold on?”)
Sooo yeah.
I didn’t pay much attention to Oliver on my first TMA listen but I’ve relistened to his statements a couple times and I’m fond of him now. Hence this:
Some Featured Songs:
1. For when he first starts to see the dream tendrils during the day - “This Side of Paradise” by Hayley Kiyoko (“False start, you sleepyhead. I’m caught up in the day with my night dreams, and my mistakes. Tell your vision, ‘no, you’re acting.’”)
2. For when he first embarks for Point Nemo and has a few good nights of sleep for once - “Alaska” by Maggie Rogers (“I thought it was a dream - so it seemed. And now, breathe deep; I’m inhaling. You and I, there’s air in between. Leave me be; I’m exhaling.”)
3. For when he is still very human, still hurting from his breakdown and his split with Graham - “Someone You Loved” by Lewis Capaldi (“I guess I kinda liked the way you numbed all the pain. Now the day bleeds into nightfall, and you’re not there to get me through it all.”)
4. For when he’s mid-mental breakdown and still trying to go through the motions of everyday life - “Normal” by AJR (“Is it normal to stand here and wish that I was back at home? Is it normal to tell her, ‘I can’t be normal anymore’? I don’t know, so maybe I should go back home.”)
5. For when he’s a fully realized Avatar of the End, has accepted his new reality, and is talking to Jon in the hospital - “Walk Through Walls” by Katie Herzig (“Before you walk through walls, you will leave all this behind. Before you walk through walls, you will look it in the eye. Before you walk through walls, you will learn to let it die, in the moment where the darkness meets the light.”)
