The X-Files, 3:20: Jose Chung's "From Outer Space"
this episode suggests that what's often happening in off-screen moments is Scully saying "what the actual fuck"
What is the plot? Jose Chung is a horror writer that Scully is a big fan of, and now he's writing a book about an alleged alien abduction, so he's interviewing her, along with many other people who were involved. This episode gives us so much: Playing with truth and perspective! The possible layers upon layers of secrecy and misinformation about alien abductions (if they are happening)! Hypnotism! A campy acknowledgement of the fact that you can't say "fuck" on U.S. network TV! Scully steadfastly not believing that alien abductions are really real, even though she might have experienced one! Actual Alex Trebek, as a version of himself who might be a hallucination! A mention of Jimmy Carter believing he saw a UFO! An army pilot in an alien suit! A guy who remembers Scully as a man in black disguised as a woman with hair that's too red to be real???
What does this episode suggest about Mulder and Scully’s relationship with each other? Jose Chung raised his eyebrows so high when Scully said that Mulder had slept in her motel room (he slept on the couch). They do some primo "sitting in a motel room and talking about theories" (though, tragically, the light is bad in this motel room). And, in Scully's conversation with Jose Chung, she says "my partner thinks...." about things she doesn't buy a comical number of times.
Where are the aliens? it's either aliens or army pilots in alien costumes or a secret third thing!!!
